Remember tomorrow April 7th is the day! Make your voices heard!

Along with the important vote on the future of Public Safety dispatching in Andrew County, voters will also have a property tax question on the ballot otherwise known at Senate Bill 3.

Our friends at Johnson County Fire Protection District do an excellent job at explaining what effect this could have on all local agencies statewide, including schools. Please take a few moments to read and understand this important information.

On April 7th you, the citizens we serve, will be faced with a decision concerning your property taxes when you go to vote. The issue you will decide would limit how much a home’s taxable value can increase for property tax purposes. The tax credits provided would result in indefinitely flat revenue for not only our District, but also school districts, ambulance districts, libraries and other services. The services provided by these organizations sustain some impact by these property tax freezes.

Our District is funded entirely by property taxes and we are already limited in growth by existing Missouri law. Unfortunately, our operating costs continue to rise, much like those experienced by many households and other industries. The proposed ballot issue would freeze permitted growth which could result in a need to ask for tax levy increases to fund the essential services required as our cost of business continues to grow.

Continued flat revenue may limit our ability to maintain apparatus and life-safety equipment in a timely manner as they reach the end of their service life. We encourage you to further research SB3 (Senate Bill 3) which will appear on your ballot on April 7.

Did you know three of our trucks each carry 1000’ of 4” supply hose otherwise known as LDH. That sounds like a lot, especially if you’re the one picking it up! This hose is very valuable on fire scenes in both rural and urban areas. On long narrow driveways we have to “lay in” and drop this supply line at the road, keeping the driveway from being congested and allowing our water supply tankers to leave and fill faster, improving our ability to supply water in those situations.

This hose also has special connectors on it called Storz fittings. These fittings allow these large hoses to be connected and disconnected with only 1/2 of a turn, creating a fast and secure connection when time is crucial.

Thanks to the help of grant funding, we have also been able to make major upgrades to our attack lines and nozzles, replacing some that was pushing 30 years old!

This hose is the workhorse of our department and is what we use to put out almost all of the fires that we respond to outside of natral cover fires.

Each of our engines carries two 200’ 1.75” preconnected attack lines and one 200’ 2.5” preconnected attack line. Engine 62 also carries an additional 150’ 1.75” attack line in the front bumper.

You can see what it looks like when we “lay in” our LDH when responding to a call in the video below!

The Savannah Rural Fire Department is proud to provide a Safe Haven Baby Box, offering a safe, legal and completely anonymous option for parents in crisis situations.

Our Baby Box allows a newborn (up to 90 days old per Missouri Safe Haven law) to be placed safely inside of our station any day, any time. It is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Once opened, silent alarms will alert firefighters and first responders, allowing the baby to be cared for right away - with warmth, compassion and dignity.

No questions. No judgement - only safety, care and hope.
