Friends and neighbors,

To balance between serving my community and my personal commitments, I will put most of my social media accounts on hold for some time. I’ll still be reachable by phone. If you have questions or want to connect, please call. I’ll stay connected with friends in person and with the community I love in as many ways as possible, as I have done since starting public service about a decade ago. I’m hoping this will help me preserve the privacy of my personal life and also be more connected with the things I care most about. Corvallis School District constituents can always connect on school board issues using the district’s website contact information.

I would like to leave you with words that keep my hope alive, especially in the hardest days.

I look forward to connecting with you soon!
Sami

Statement on Incident at the Islamic Community Center of Hillsboro.

On Saturday, March 21, 2026, a day after Eid, a bullet was fired from outside the Islamic Community Center of Hillsboro. The incident is being treated as a hate crime and remains under investigation. Alhamdulillah, no one was harmed.

As one of the first Muslim women elected in Washington County, I strongly condemn hate, discrimination, and violence in all its forms. Our community is strongest when we stand together with respect, dignity, and understanding.

Regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs, every person deserves to feel safe and valued. No one should have to fear for their safety in a place of worship or anywhere in our community.

I remain committed to working with partners across Washington County to promote peace, mutual respect, and unity. We must continue to stand together and speak out against hate in all its forms.

Osborn Aquatic Center is a community cornerstone of recreational and life-saving skill development. It is one of the long-standing partnerships between the Corvallis School District, which has leased the center over the past few decades to City of Corvallis, which passed a Levy with goals among them to operate and maintain the Center

Speaking up about survivorship is arguably one of the hardest and most difficult decisions a survivor can make in their lifetime. Dolores Huerta and other survivors have lived to make this difficult decision. What a tragedy to learn that they have endured this pain for many years in silence. Please take a moment to read her statement and reflect on what it means to you when it comes to honoring survivors, renaming institutions, buildings and roads, and acknowledging that honoring a movement is never done by dismissing hurtful actions by those taking a leading role in such movements.

March 18, 2026

Today, civil rights leader Dolores Huerta issued the following statement:

“I am nearly 96 years old, and for the last 60 years have kept a secret because I believed that exposing the truth would hurt the farmworker movement I have spent my entire life fighting for.

I have encouraged people to always use their voice. Following the New York Times’ multi-year investigation into s*xual misconduct by Cesar Chavez, I can no longer stay silent and must share my own experiences.

As a young mother in the 1960s, I experienced two separate s*xual encounters with Cesar. The first time I was manipulated and pressured into having s*x with him, and I didn’t feel I could say no because he was someone that I admired, my boss and the leader of the movement I had already devoted years of my life to. The second time I was forced, against my will, and in an environment where I felt trapped.

I had experienced abuse and s*xual violence before, and I convinced myself these were incidents that I had to endure alone and in secret. Both s*xual encounters with Cesar led to pregnancies. I chose to keep my pregnancies secret and, after the children were born, I arranged for them to be raised by other families that could give them stable lives.

Over the years, I have been fortunate to develop a deep relationship with these children, who are now close to my other children, their siblings. But even then, no one knew the full truth about how they were conceived until just a few weeks ago.

I carried this secret for as long as I did because building the movement and securing farmworker rights was my life’s work. The formation of a union was the only vehicle to accomplish and secure those rights and I wasn’t going to let Cesar or anyone else get in the way. I channeled everything I had into advocating on behalf of millions of farmworkers and others who were suffering and deserved equal rights.

I have never identified myself as a victim, but I now understand that I am a survivor — of violence, of s*xual abuse, of domineering men who saw me, and other women, as property, or things to control.

I am telling my story because the New York Times has indicated that I was not the only one — there were others. Women are coming forward, sharing that they were s*xually abused and assaulted by Cesar when they were girls and teenagers.

The knowledge that he hurt young girls sickens me. My heart aches for everyone who suffered alone and in silence for years. There are no words strong enough to condemn those deplorable actions that he did. Cesar’s actions do not reflect the values of our community and our movement.

The farmworker movement has always been bigger and far more important than any one individual. Cesar’s actions do not diminish the permanent improvements achieved for farmworkers with the help of thousands of people. We must continue to engage and support our community, which needs advocacy and activism now more than ever.

I will continue my commitments to workers, as well as my commitment to women’s rights, to make sure we have a voice and that our communities are treated with dignity and given the equity that they have so long been denied.

I have kept this secret long enough. My silence ends here."

If you are a survivor or if you have been impacted by any type of s*xual violence, please visit the Dolores Huerta Foundation website, where you will find a list of resources for support. https://doloreshuerta.org/s*xual_assault_resources/

Our colleagues in Portland, Oregon are navigating difficult decisions that they will have to make. Instructional hours are among the most impactful factors to help children learn. I feel for the challanges they are facing. While many of us across Oregon, and the nation, are facing unique budgetary challenges, here are the elements impacting Portland Public Schools:

“[Portland Public Schools] Chief Financial Officer for Portland Public Schools, has said problems with the current budget are due to the following factors:

- Less-than-expected savings from jobs left vacant after resignations and retirements that have unfolded during the course of the school year.

- Costs of responding to multiple federal lawsuits, including a case filed by a high school math teacher alleging that the district allowed his colleagues to promote and distribute “anti-Israel material,” a Washington, D.C. think tank’s suit alleging that the formula the district uses to allocate staff is biased in favor of schools with higher proportions of non-white students, and an investigation by the Trump administration into the district’s pending Center for Black Student Excellence. The district is also facing an investigation from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights over its policies on transgender athletes.

- Services that were slated for cuts being restored without equivalent trims made elsewhere. Examples include positions added to schools to help meet student needs, Kelly said, as well as increased costs in transportation and maintenance.

- Emergency facility spending, including a steam leak at Cleveland High School, a cooling system and guard rail repairs at Benson High School, a broken pipe at Sabin Elementary, a sewer break at Rigler Elementary and other significant repairs at Sitton and Buckman elementary schools.

- Revenues from the district’s local operating levy are $5 million less than predicted because of lower commercial property tax collections, an issue that is also do***ng the city of Portland’s budget.”

The Portland Association of Teachers says its members have been asked to take up to four furlough days before the end of the current school year to patch a $14 million midyear budget deficit. That is $4 million more than school district leaders had acknowledged facing in late February, when the unexpected budget deficit first came to light.
