Gloria Steinem passed away Wednesday. To understand what her death actually means, you have to go back to what an ordinary Tuesday looked like for an American woman in 1971. She could not walk into a bank and open an account in her own name without a husband's signature backing it up. She could not apply for a credit card as herself; the application assumed a man stood behind her. And if a boss cornered her at work, there was no name for what had happened to her, because the legal concept of s*xual harassment did not yet exist. Not underused. Not under-enforced. Nonexistent. Steinem spent the next five decades making sure none of that stayed true.

September is Hunger Action Month, a time when people across the country join together to help end hunger. This September we are asking you to Rethink Hunger and to take action with us to build solutions that work for all Oregonians.

Hunger is everywhere in Oregon — from Tillamook to Portland to Ontario, in rural, urban and suburban communities. Across our state, 1 in 6 people are at risk of going hungry. Families are making impossible decisions as rent prices rise faster than wages and healthcare and childcare costs keep climbing. At the same time, Oregonians have lost vital federal food assistance that helps put food on the table.

Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal following the landslide that caused devastating floods on 26 August.

Zonta International has been in contact with Zonta leaders and members in Nepal, and we are grateful to report that all Zontians are safe.

We appreciate the compassion and desire of Zontians to support and help. As the situation unfolds, we encourage patience as the clubs assess how to best address the needs of those within their communities.

As the impacts of this disaster continue, we remain committed to advocating for climate justice and gender-responsive climate action that ensures women and girls are not left further behind.

August 26 is Women’s Equality Day, marking the certification of the 19th Amendment and women’s right to vote.

More than a century later, the work toward full equality continues.

The Equal Rights Amendment would add explicit constitutional protection against discrimination on the basis of s*x. More than 170,000 people have signed a petition calling on Congress to take action to recognize the ERA.

All Women’s Equal Pay Day, held this year on March 26th, symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. The wage gap is even greater for women of color. The wage gap has widened since 2024 when Equal Pay Day was March 12th.

According to the latest U.S. Census figures, women who work full time are paid on average just 81% of the typical man’s pay. Women still face barriers in accessing good-paying jobs and carry a disproportionate burden for caregiving responsibilities in our society. Additionally, the lack of affordable childcare and paid family and medical leave contribute to women being unable to join the workforce or stay in the workforce. Pay equity and family friendly policies make good business sense and will help employers attract and retain the best talent. The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened existing inequalities and has made the problem of unequal pay more urgent.

The pay gap over time results in women saving less for retirement than men, earning lower pensions and social security payments, having a larger burden of student debt, and results in women having less economic security than male counterparts.

We encourage women to advocate for themselves; state and federal governments to enact legislation that ensures equal pay for women; and businesses to review their compensation policies to ensure that historical policies and pay practices are not unfairly disadvantaging women. We also advocate for the recognition of the Equal Rights Amendment, which would provide constitutional support for the fight for Equal Pay.

We join the National Committee on Pay Equity in calling for our members, and all women and men, to wear red on March 26 to symbolize how far women are “in the red” on Equal Pay Day.
