Tobacco Free Zone of Cortland, Tompkins & Chenango Tobacco use remains the single most preventable cause of death in the United States, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths each year.

Tobacco Free Zone of Cortland, Tompkins & Chenango Counties, including Reality Check (youth-engagement component), is dedicated to reducing burden of tobacco in our communities. The Tobacco Free Zone of Cortland, Tompkins & Chenango Counties (including the youth engagement component Reality Check) is a program based at the Cortland County Health Department, and is funded by the New York State Depa

rtment of Health's Bureau of Tobacco Control. The Tobacco Free Zone engages in community education and advocacy dedicated to keep the air smoke-free, support smokers who want to quit, and help teens beat the tobacco trap, because we cannot afford another generation of tobacco addiction. An estimated 41,000 of these tobacco-related deaths are the result of secondhand smoke exposure. More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from HIV/AIDS, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. The total economic cost of smoking is more than $300 billion a year.

**PRESS RELEASE** JUUL Settlement Funding available for local entities to address vaping-related illness and addiction among youth and young adults. The Cortland County Health Department and Cortland County Legislature are seeking proposals from a broad range of entities – including, but not limited to, non-profits, for-profits, academic and healthcare institutions, and community-based organizations, for the purpose of utilization of the JUUL Settlement Funding provided to and solely serving Cortland County.
