The City of Cortland Fire Department proudly congratulates Probationary Firefighters Roman and Langtry on graduating from the New York State Recruit Firefighter Training Program.

Over the course of an intensive 15-week residential fire academy, they demonstrated dedication, discipline, and commitment while completing rigorous training designed to prepare the next generation of firefighters for service to their community.

This achievement marks the beginning of an important career in public service, and we are proud to welcome them as they continue their journey with the department.

Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, we proudly recognize the brave men and women of the City of Cortland Fire Department for their outstanding contributions, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to protecting our community.

International Firefighters’ Day is observed each year on May 4th, a date that also honors Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. This day serves as a global reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and commitment that firefighters demonstrate every time they answer the call—often risking their own lives to save others.

Saint Florian’s legacy dates back to the Roman era, when he became known for his leadership, bravery, and, ultimately, his sacrifice. His story continues to symbolize the values firefighters uphold today: service, integrity, and selflessness.

To the members of the City of Cortland Fire Department—thank you for your tireless work, your strength in the face of danger, and your steadfast commitment to keeping our community safe. Your service is not unnoticed, and today we honor you.

Behind every Meals on Wheels delivery is a hardworking team making it all possible. Our kitchen staff prepares up to 200 meals each day for residents across Cortland County, ensuring every meal is nutritious and made with care.
Today we also thank Deputy Chief Derek Reynolds from the City of Cortland Fire Department for joining our driver, Phyllis, to help deliver meals during March for Meals Champions Week. Community support like this helps us continue serving older adults throughout Cortland County.
