Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a reminder of the importance of freedom, equality, and unity.

Thank you to the Cortland Breakfast Rotary Club for hosting another great McGruff golf tournament yesterday. This is the 36th year of the tournament and all 36 years have been at Elm Tree Golf Course. Although we had to pause for a bit due to the storm, it ended up being a great afternoon. Proceeds from this tournament go towards our CPD McGruff and K9 funds, as well as several other community organizations to benefit the children of our community. Our CPD golfers, and non-golfers, will see you again next year.

In just 2 hours, our Dispatch Center managed 186 storm-related calls, helping coordinate response efforts across the county during severe weather impacts.

From reports of:

🚧 Roadway hazards
⚠️ Utility notifications
🚨 Emergency response coordination

Our dispatchers worked tirelessly to prioritize emergencies, notify utility providers, coordinate with first responders, and ensure critical information reached the right people as quickly as possible.

As damage assessments continue, additional incidents may still be reported throughout the county. We remain committed to supporting our residents and response partners every step of the way.

👏 A sincere thank you to our dispatchers, field responders, highway departments, utility crews, and partner agencies for their dedication, professionalism, and service during this event.

⚠️ Safety Reminder: If you encounter a downed power line, stay away and report it immediately. Always assume downed wires are energized.

🌪️ TORNADO WATCH ISSUED FOR CORTLAND COUNTY 🌪️
The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Cortland County until 3:00 PM today (Thursday, June 18).
A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, and large hail. While a tornado is not currently occurring, residents should stay alert and be prepared to take action if warnings are issued.
✅ Review your severe weather safety plan
✅ Identify a safe shelter location, such as a basement or interior room on the lowest floor
✅ Keep your cell phone charged and ensure emergency alerts are enabled
✅ Monitor weather conditions throughout the day
If a Tornado Warning is issued for your area, seek shelter immediately.
Stay weather aware and monitor trusted sources, including the National Weather Service and Cortland County Emergency Response & Communications, for updates

🟣 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – July 15, 2026 🟣

On Monday June 15, 2026, the Cortland Police Department joined community members and agency partners across Cortland County in recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and reaffirming our commitment to protecting older adults from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and fraud.

Police Chief David Guerrera was honored to speak at the “Shine a Light" Ceremony on the steps of the County Office Building, joining fellow community leaders, advocates, service providers, and dignitaries in raising awareness about an issue that affects millions of older adults each year.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and scams targeting vulnerable seniors. Awareness, education, and reporting are critical to preventing victimization and ensuring our older residents remain safe, respected, and connected to resources. Chief Guerrera’s presentation focused on prevention. Encouraging residents to:
- Stay connected. Check in regularly. Isolated people are easily victimized.
- Be aware. Monitor bank accounts, credit reports, email, and text messages
- Automate. Set up direct deposit and automatic bill payments.
- Plan ahead. Establish power of attorney, health care proxy, and joint financial accounts.
- Monitor location. Set locator apps on smart phones, install surveillance cameras.
- Say something. If you suspect elder abuse, contact your local police department or sheriff’s office, call the County Office on Aging or County Adult Protective Services.

We thank all of the organizations and individuals who work tirelessly to support and protect older adults throughout Cortland County. We also recognize the work of the Cortland County Elder Abuse Multidisciplinary Team (E-MDT). Together, we can help ensure that every older adult is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.
