The City of Cortland and the Cortland Police Department have launched a Community Question and Concerns Forum to provide residents with an opportunity to ask questions, share insights or concerns, and offer comments regarding the proposed expansion and deployment of public camera systems throughout the city.

The forum is intended to encourage transparency, open dialogue, and meaningful public discussion regarding both support for and concerns about the use of public safety technology. This includes the potential expansion of the City’s existing public safety camera network and the proposed deployment of Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) systems.

Community input will help inform the development of policies and procedures governing these technologies, including privacy protections, data management, appropriate use, and public accountability measures.

Residents are encouraged to visit the City of Cortland website to review information and participate in the forum: www.cortlandny.gov/620/camera-forum

Beginning in October, the city will post responses to questions, insights, concerns, and comments submitted through the forum. Responses will be developed by a Community Camera Focus Group consisting of City officials, Cortland Police Department administration, community camera system administrators, and City information technology representatives.

The City of Cortland and the Cortland Police Department remain committed to balancing public safety needs with the protection of individual privacy and the responsible, transparent use of emerging technology. Community participation is an important part of that process.
