Now that the areas impacted by the Ferris Fire are open, we'd like to remind the public of the hazards that could be encountered when entering a burned area. Please use caution, especially on roadways where heavy machinery could be working just around the next corner.

David Cifaldi was hiking up Granite Peak, Montana’s tallest mountain, last week when he slipped and fell on one of his trekking poles.

He and his group hiked all the way back out with the impaled pole left in place, as is standard practice in wilderness first aid.

His biggest takeaway from the ordeal: Have a way to contact SAR. His group used the SOS feature on a satellite GPS device, but they were able to self-evacuate while SAR remained on standby.
