Sylvia Green, representing Habitat for Humanity, was the guest speaker at the Monday, Feb 19 Kiwanis Club of Corsicana meeting. Sylvia presented a power point show about the history of HFH. Also in the presentation were pictures of several of the houses which have been built featuring some of the volunteer groups which have assisted in one or more houses over the years. Several persons are regulars working on each house providing continuity in the process with a construction supervisor being present to guide the work flow. Sylvia thanked the Kiwanis members for being a regular participant in three of the 13 houses. Nine houses have been built on Gioia Circle which is close to the Salvation Army building. One house has been completed on some land just east of Carroll Elementary school on East 13th Ave with a 2nd home in progress. This acreage has capacity for 13 homes. Sylvia pointed out that Habitat for Humanity does not give homes away. Instead they build the home with volunteer help after paying for the slab, plumbing and materials. The prospective owners are required to put in 200 hours of sweat equity. Then HFH provides low cost loans to the new owners. HFH has had only one home which they have had to repossess since start up several years back. Green, left, is pictured with Bonnie Stover Secretary for Kiwanis Club.
