💙 April marks National Child Abuse Prevention Month 💙 At CACTX, we’re shining a light on the need to protect children and strengthen the communities that stand behind them. Every child deserves the freedom to simply be a kid.

While April elevates this message, our commitment to preventing child sexual abuse is unwavering. Prevention is possible. By equipping adults with the knowledge and actions needed, we can stop child sexual abuse before it happens. Join Children's Advocacy Centers of Texas, Inc. as we work together to protect childhood and build a brighter future for every child.

Thank you to all the people who made this possible!

Maria Barajas was sentenced to life in prison today for continuous sexual abuse of a young child. The trial started with jury selection Monday, the jury returned a verdict of guilty Wednesday and this morning the jury set her sentence at life in prison. Barajas will not be eligible for parole.

In 2016 Barajas was hired to babysit two young children after school until their parent finished work. Barajas and her husband sometimes watched the children overnight. In May of 2017 the victim disclosed to a teacher that her babysitter’s husband had been sexually molesting her while the babysitter took videos and photos. The victim was quickly interviewed by Dr. Lydia Bailey at the Child Advocacy Center, where she revealed additional details. That afternoon Detectives Jason Earles and Kevin Scott from NCSO obtained a search warrant and went to the defendant’s residence where they seized cell phones from the defendant and her husband. The next day, based on evidence from the forensic interview of the victim and the defendant’s cell phone, the detectives returned with warrants to arrest both suspects. When they arrived at the defendant’s residence, they found her family packing up her belongings. The family told them the suspects might have gone to Mexico. Detectives promptly sent the warrant information to agencies on the Mexican border and later received a photo of the suspects crossing into Mexico in Laredo early the next morning.

In June of 2025 the defendant was arrested attempting to cross the border back into the U.S. Evidence in the trial revealed that Barajas and her husband started grooming the victim within a few days of being hired to watch the children. They quickly escalated to giving the 8 year old alcohol and sexually abusing her. Barajas both participated in the abuse and took photos and video of her husband molesting the victim.

The evidence was presented by Assistant District Attorney Katy Colts and District Attorney Will Thompson. We would like to thank Dr. Bailey and Detective Earles for their great work bringing justice for this victim. We also thank those who spent the week serving on the jury for once again sending the message that we have no tolerance for those who victimize our children.

Also this week in the 13th District Court John Henry Hood, Jr. was convicted by a jury of Theft of Property < $2500 with 2 or more previous convictions after stealing items from Walmart. Mr. Hood’s defense was that there was a computer malfunction with the self-checkout register. The CCTV video clearly showed Mr. Hood skip scanning items, meaning that he would scan some items while not scanning others before placing them in the shopping cart and attempting to exit the store. Walmart asset protection associate observed the skip scanning and purposefully paused the transaction, causing a message to appear on the register screen notifying Mr. Hood that a Walmart associate was on the way. The Asset Protection associate testified that this is their attempt to deter individuals from stealing. In this case, the deterrence did not work on Mr. Hood who continued to skip scan items after the Walmart associate left the register. Hood then attempted to leave the store, passing the last point of sale. He was confronted by the asset protection associate and arrested by the Corsicana Police Department for theft. After the jury returned the guilty verdict, Hood was faced with the punishment range of 2 to 20 years in TDCJ due to multiple prior felony convictions that were in addition to his prior theft convictions. Mr. Hood accepted a plea offer of 5 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The State was represented by Asst. District Attorneys Juliana Londono and Amber Slaton.

BACA — Bikers Against Child Abuse — is a powerful nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a safer world for abused children. They exist for one reason: to empower children who have been abused so they never feel afraid again.

These men and women show up. They stand guard. They walk children into courtrooms. They form protective lines around homes. They remind terrified children, “You are not alone anymore.”

They have always been there for me. And now, I’ve been given an incredible opportunity to be there for them — pouring hope and courage into the very people who pour courage into children every single day.

But this message of hope doesn’t happen without support.

This special conference — empowering those who empower abused children — depends on donations.

If you believe in protecting children…
If you believe in standing against evil…
If you believe those who defend the vulnerable deserve to be strengthened too…

Please DM me for more details if interested in making a tax-deductible donation to help fund a life-changing message at this National gathering?

When we strengthen the protectors, we strengthen the children.

Let’s stand with the ones who stand for them. 🖤
