John Sapien Announces Campaign for Sandoval County Commission, District 1: A Neighbor Ready to Lead
[Sandoval County, NM] – Former New Mexico State Senator John Sapien has officially announced his candidacy for Sandoval County Commission District 1, bringing decades of leadership experience, a small business owner’s perspective, and a strong commitment to the people and families across Sandoval County.
Sapien’s campaign is deeply rooted in the community he’s called home his entire life. A proud resident of Corrales, Sapien has spent more than 25 years as a small business owner and operator in Sandoval County, where he gained firsthand experience in problem-solving, accountability, and economic development. In addition to his professional career, John has served as a little league umpire and, most importantly, as a proud father of three children—a role that’s shaped how he approaches both service and leadership.
“This campaign is about family, community, and the future of Sandoval County,” Sapien said. “Whether it’s in the halls of government, on the baseball field, or at my business, I’ve always been committed to the success of this community we all call home. I’m running because I believe we need leadership that listens, works collaboratively, and delivers real solutions for families and businesses in District 1.”
District 1 encompasses the Town of Bernalillo, the Placitas Area, Southeastern Rio Rancho, the Pueblo of Sandia, the Village of Corrales, and La Madera. These neighborhoods represent the beauty and diversity of Sandoval County, and Sapien has spent the last year reconnecting with friends and neighbors to better understand their concerns and hopes for the future. Even after leaving his post in the New Mexico State Senate, Sapien hasn’t stopped fielding calls and meeting with residents looking for guidance and leadership to help with everyday challenges.
“I’ve spent the past year listening to neighbors and friends—from educators and parents to small business owners and first responders—about the issues impacting Sandoval County. And what’s clear is that people don’t just want to be heard—they want action and leadership they can trust. Whether I’m answering calls from a neighbor in Bernalillo or sitting down with folks in Corrales, my goal is always the same: to find solutions that lift up people and move our communities forward,” Sapien explained.
John Sapien’s approach to public service has always been about collaboration and constructive action. In his 12 years as a New Mexico State Senator, Sapien built a reputation as a bipartisan problem solver, working across the aisle to focus on issues affecting everyday New Mexicans. From improving public education to bolstering economic development and supporting safe communities, Sapien worked tirelessly to deliver meaningful results for constituents.
“Just because I left the Senate doesn’t mean I stopped serving this community. Public service isn’t a job you clock out of—it’s a commitment you carry every day,” Sapien said. “I’ve continued working collaboratively to address the issues that impact us most, and I’m ready to bring that same energy and responsiveness to the Sandoval County Commission.”
As a candidate for the Sandoval County Commission, Sapien is focused on key issues affecting District 1:
• Transparency and Accountability: Ensuring residents have a strong, clear voice in decision-making.
• Smart Growth and Infrastructure: Protecting natural resources like water and open spaces while working to meet the needs of families in growing communities.
• Public Safety: Supporting law enforcement, first responders, and community-based safety initiatives.
• Economic Development: Creating opportunities for local businesses and investing in the long-term economic health of Sandoval County.
Sapien’s campaign emphasizes bringing people together and ensuring that everyone in District 1—no matter where they live—has a seat at the table.
“From the historic streets of Bernalillo to the sweeping landscapes of Placitas, from the traditions of the Pueblo of Sandia to the growing neighborhoods of Southeastern Rio Rancho, Sandoval County represents diversity, connection, and unity,” Sapien said. “We’re stronger when we work together, and I’m running to ensure every family, every business, and every neighborhood has leadership that listens and takes action.”
John Sapien’s deep connection to Sandoval County drives his campaign—and his commitment to service. His late father, Bill Sapien, served as Sandoval County Commissioner for District 1, inspiring John to live by the belief that leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about what you do for others.
“My father taught me that the most important thing you can do is to show up for people and lead with integrity. His example shaped my approach to service and reminds me every day why I do this work: it’s for families, communities, and a brighter future for generations to come,” Sapien said.
As a father of three, small business owner, elected leader, and neighbor, John’s campaign is fueled by his diverse experiences and his focus on everyday issues affecting the people of Sandoval County. Through listening sessions, community engagement, and collaboration, Sapien promises to put people first.
“This isn’t about politics—it’s about people. It’s about finding practical solutions to real problems and building a county where our families thrive,” Sapien said. “I’m ready to work hard for all of our residents, from Corrales to La Madera, to make sure Sandoval County is always a place we’re proud to call home.”
