Definitely a WOW in the Sam Jones Orchid Conservatory you need to see!
Cattlianthe ‘CHOCOLATE DROP’ orchid is a consistent bloomer with clusters of dark red or maroon-colored 3” blossoms. Each inflorescence often has more than a dozen blossoms, creating a majestic display rising above contrasting pale green foliage. Registered in 1965 by Stewart, Inc., this well-known primary hybrid was a cross between Cattleya guttata & Guarianthe aurantiaca, an instant classic for orchid enthusiasts. 'Chocolate Drop' is a real stand-out with its distinctive dark red color amongst more common purples & whites! COME SEE....WE'RE OPEN LABOR DAY!

Featuring ‘TEXAS FIESTA’ PLUMERIA, which even in this heat is a "party animal!" Blooming easily & consistently, it produces clusters of medium pink blossoms with yellow/orange centers. The 3” wide flowers have a sweet spicy fragrance. Best known as the Hawaiian lei flower, plumeria actually are native to the Caribbean & Tropical Americas from Brazil into Southern Mexico. They can take heat & short periods of dry weather, but bloom best with extra water. Peak flowering here is July-September. In November, they're dug up to winter bareroot in protective greenhouses. ‘Texas Fiesta’ is 1 of 80-plus plumeria varieties displayed & curated by the Plumeria Society of South Texas in the Plumeria Garden. It's definitely worth a trip right now! Thank you to those dedicated volunteers! ☀️

We suddenly find ourselves IN NEED of TWO WHEELCHAIRS! Our attraction is wheelchair accessible, having two faithful models for years. But one just lost its wheels; the other no longer stable--a surprise to our budget! Frequently, traveling guests arrive with a need. If a local hospital, clinic, doctor's office, assisted living center (etc) might be getting new ones, & could rehome older models--the Botanical Gardens would gladly accept either motorized or manual donations! We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Please call MaryJane or Kathie, 361-852-2100, to help. Many thanks!
