Professor, political activist and author Angela Davis was born in 1944.

Davis has written extensively on racism, class, Black feminism and the U.S. prison system, shaping generations of scholarship and activism. Her work continues to challenge systems of oppression and expand our understanding of justice and liberation.

In 2020, she was named one of Time magazine’s most influential people in the world.

Did you know that Cesar Chavez became one of the first Latinos to have a U.S. naval ship named after him? The USNS Cesar Chavez was launched on May 5, 2012.

Chavez joined the Navy at the age of 19 and faced discrimination before the Armed Services were desegregated in 1948. Like many young people of color, he returned from his service determined to see his country fulfill its promise of equality and opportunity.

Chavez’s Navy service fueled his drive to fight for human rights and justice for migrant workers.

Today, and every day, we express our deepest gratitude to veterans for their incredible sacrifices and honor their unwavering dedication to our nation. Happy Veterans Day!
