Border Water Quality Restoration and Protection Act of 2024 announced!

Today I was fortunate to join US Senator Alex Padilla, Congress members Juan Vargas and Scott Peters, Supervisor Nora Vargas and officials from the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) where I serve on the Advisory Board to announce the Border Water Quality Restoration and Protection Act of 2024. This act, if it becomes law, will give the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the supervisory role over the sewage and related water quality issues from the Trans-Border Sewage flows. The EPA will have enhanced powers and responsibility over Federal, state and local efforts and activities, as well as be empowered to acccept and spend funds amongst all. The bill includes authorization to appropriate $50 million per year for the next ten years ($500 million total) in new funding for the EPA to resolve this crises and to assist the much smaller IBWC with the expansion of the sewage treatment plant. I am heading to Washington DC to seek support for this bill next week and have three straight days of back to back meetings with Congress Members. I will also be seeking funding in the 2025 budget for the IBWC which is still short funds to complete the expansion. The additional good news is the design build contract for repair and expansion of the sewage treatment plant was awarded by the IBWC last week and the work is starting.

Yesterday I used the app to order an Island Express ride to Garage Buona Forchetta for the Coronado Chamber of Commerce Board Swearing in dinner. It said it would pick me up in three minutes. Picked me up for a quick and pleasant ride. Very nice driver. Wonderful time with our local Chamber.

Beautiful day and a wonderful Opening Day Ceremony at Coronado Yacht Club where I am proud to be a member. The invocation and recognition of members lost over the year was moving; and the tribute to service members is always a highlight. Mayor Richard Bailey just back from a successful Everest summit joined to read the City Proclamation.
