On September 16, 1776, Peter Grubb Jr. participate in the Battle of Harlem Heights in New York. This battle marked one of the first Continental military victories during the war under General George Washington’s command.

Workers lit Cornwall Iron Furnace for the last time at 2:40PM on September 13, 1881. The furnace would operate for seventeen more months before going out of blast for the last time on February 11, 1883.

Sarah Ann Bell of Drake Well Museum and Park will highlight the life of Titusville resident Col. E.A.L Roberts who, while serving in the Civil War, used torpedoes. He later utilized torpedoes with nitroglycerine to 'shoot' oil wells, breaking up hard layers of rock to drill down to the oil (think along the lines of early fracking).

Rachel Yerger, regional curator with PHMC, will focus on an 18th century microscope, by W&S Jones, while discussing the life & career of Joseph Priestley. Priestley, a scientist, theologian, educator and political dissident, is probably best known for isolating oxygen.

Clash of the Collections, a lively virtual showdown where PHMC museums across the Commonwealth go head-to-head to present an artifact from their collection that best embodies the monthly theme, in this case, Revolutionary Legacies. Tune in, discover Pennsylvania’s hidden history, and cast your vote.
