Corning Joint Fire District

Corning Joint Fire District The Corning Joint Fire District was established on January 1st, 2020, providing fire and rescue. Chief, Randy Brenning
Deputy Chief, Adam Nehring.

Prior to the inception of the Corning Joint Fire District, fire protection was provided by three private fire departments- East Corning Fire Department, Village of South Corning Fire Department and the North Corning Fire Department. On January 1st, 2020, the creation of the Corning Joint Fire District merged the three private independent operating fire departments into one Fire Department entity,

operating out of three fire stations, now labeled as:
Station 16 (previously East Corning FD)
Station 34 (previously South Corning FD)
Station 43 (previously North Corning FD)

The Corning Joint Fire District, the Authority Having Jurisdiction, is governed by five fire commissioners who levy a tax onto the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning applicable property owners. Commission Chair, Dave Shaffer
Commissioner, John Clarkson
Commissioner, Larry Eccleston
Commissioner, Stan Gridley Jr

District fire operations are executed by the Board of Fire Commissioners appointed Chief and Deputy Chief. Prior to the formation of the fire district, all three fire departments were operating together under mutual aid agreements and were regularly training together. The purpose for creating the Corning Joint Fire District has multiple points:

1. Improve the fire service for all tax-payers, visitors and commuters in the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning.

2. Eliminate all taxing disparities throughout the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning.

3. Standardize training for firefighters and EMS responders.

4. Standardize Standard Operating Procedures.

5. Standardize and optimize response to emergencies throughout the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning.

6. Standardize apparatus and reducing vehicle maintenance costs through reduction of duplicate or unneeded apparatus and equipment.

7. Increase volunteer staffing quality and availability.

8. Improvement of tax-payers ISO rating.

This past Sunday, CJFD trained alongside many of our mutual aid partners during a water supply drill.

The focus of this training was to determine the maximum fire flow we could sustain using a tanker/tender operation, as well as identify when and how it makes sense to transition to drafting operations utilizing a portable pond.

The drill also provided an excellent opportunity to practice establishing a tanker fill site and refine the coordination required to keep water moving efficiently.

A big thank you to the members of the Coopers Plains Long Acres Fire Department,Forest View Gang Mills Fire Department, and Big Flats Fire Department. It was a great opportunity to strengthen collaboration, and take home valuable lessons learned.

Yesterday, members of the Corning Joint Fire District spent time visiting the gravesites of past members from our parent organizations. It gave us the opportunity to clean and care for their memorial sites while reflecting on where our organization came from, and the service many of these members gave to both our community and our nation throughout their lifetimes.

As many of us do over Memorial Day weekend, we took time to reflect on their sacrifices and remember the importance of continuing to build the kind of community they would have been proud to serve.

From all of us at the Corning Joint Fire District, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

This week, we would like to recognize and thank the dedicated EMS professionals who answer the call every day to provide lifesaving care to our community.

We are proud to stand alongside our ambulance service partners who provide the advanced medical interventions and transport our community relies on during some of life’s most critical moments.

Emergency response is truly a team effort. We are honored to work beside the EMS providers who bring compassion, professionalism, and skill to every emergency they respond to.

Thank you to all EMS providers for your commitment, sacrifice, and dedication to serving others when they need it most.

Happy EMS Week.

🚨 The First of Many 🚨

CJFD has 2 more members returning from classes with certs in hand. FF Norm West and FF Alex Nichols have successfully completed BEFO, the first of many courses in the fire service.

BEFO serves as the foundation for fireground operations and provides firefighters with the essential knowledge and skills needed to begin their journey in the fire service. From fire behavior and basic tactics to safety and operational fundamentals, this course opens the door to countless future trainings and opportunities within the fire service.

Congratulations gentlemen, keep up the hard work.

🚨 Another Class in the Books 🚨

Please join us in congratulating FF Teagan Brown FF Michael Okonsky, FF Jaovian Fisher, FF Jesse Wilson, and FF Joshua Donescoss on successfully completing Firefighter Self Rescue.

This demanding course is designed to prepare firefighters for emergency situations that may arise while operating at structural fires. Throughout the training, members sharpened critical skills including equipment confidence, firefighter orientation, obstacle navigation, and bailout procedures.

Training like this reinforces the importance of remaining calm under pressure, trusting your equipment, and having the knowledge and confidence to react when seconds matter most.

Great work by all involved, and congratulations on another important certification completed. Keep up the great work Hero Squad!

On 5/10/2026 at 6:26 PM, the Corning Joint Fire District was dispatched to the area of Glen Ave and Erie St in the Village of South Corning for a reported smoke investigation. The caller reported the smell of chemicals burning in the area.

Upon arrival and completing a 360 size-up, Chief 47-01 located a working structure fire involving a single-family residential dwelling with an unknown occupancy status. An upgraded alarm assignment brought automatic aid from the City of Corning Fire Department.

CJFD and CFD crews quickly forced entry into the residence, simultaneously completing a primary search, and extinguishing the fire, successfully containing the damage to the kitchen area of the home. The structure was under renovation and no occupants were displaced as a result of the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Steuben County Fire Investigation Team. Crews operated on scene for approximately two hours, clearing the incident around 8:30 PM.

We would like to thank all responding personnel for their coordinated efforts and professionalism throughout the incident.

A congratulations is in order!

Allan Atherton was one of the first campers to participate in our Firefighter Experience Camp. He later joined as a full member and quickly attained his interior firefighter certification. From his decision to attend school and join Liverpool’s bunk-in program, it became apparent that Allan had found a passion he wanted to turn into a career.

His time in the bunk-in program was a sign of what was to come, and we could not be more proud of him for landing a full-time position out of state. We can’t wait to see where this new career takes you, Allan!

We would like to congratulate our own bunk in Allan for achieving his dream and becoming a career firefighter. Allan has been with us for 2 years and has gained a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge. He has become a reliable senior bunk in, who we will miss having around. Another bittersweet but successful story to another bunk in. Good luck Allan!
