FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

This morning at approximately 8:30 a.m., officers with the Cordele Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Stewart Avenue regarding a trespassing complaint. Before officers arrived, the alleged trespasser, a 36-year-old male, left the area.

Shortly afterward, the same individual called 911 and reported that the resident who had reported him for trespassing was allegedly selling illegal narcotics from the residence.

While investigating both incidents, officers located the 36-year-old male behind the vacant Pizza Hut building. When officers attempted to speak with him regarding the trespassing complaint and the information he had provided to 911, he immediately fled on foot.

Officers coordinated a search of the area and ultimately located and apprehended the suspect behind the Circle K on East 16th Avenue.

Following his apprehension, officers conducted a search of the suspect and the route he traveled while fleeing. During the search, officers recovered a large quantity of suspected ma*****na, digital scales, a loaded 9mm handgun, jewelry, and a substantial amount of U.S. currency.

As a result of the investigation, the suspect was charged with:

Possession of Ma*****na with Intent to Distribute
Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of Certain Crimes
Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer
Abandonment of a Controlled Substance
Loitering or Prowling

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming pending further review of the evidence recovered.

Last night around 1:00 a.m., officers with the Cordele Police Department were actively handling a separate call for service when they heard multiple gunshots coming from the area of the Morningside Apartments. Officers immediately responded to investigate.

Through the combined efforts of our officers and Crisp County Dispatchers, the suspects were quickly located and fi****ms were recovered. Deputies with the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist, and together several individuals were detained.
Of the several individuals detained during the investigation, three were taken into custody and charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Person Under 18 Years of Age.

We are thankful for the quick response of our officers and teamwork displayed by both our agency and the Crisp County Sheriff's Office. Incidents involving fi****ms in the hands of young people continue to be a serious concern for our community. We remain committed to proactively responding to violent crime and working to keep our neighborhoods safe.

As Memorial Day Weekend and graduation celebrations begin, the Cordele Police Department would like to remind everyone to make safety a priority on our roadways. This time of year brings increased travel, gatherings with family and friends, and celebrations throughout our community. Unfortunately, it also brings an increase in impaired and reckless driving incidents.

If you choose to drink, please do so responsibly and never get behind the wheel impaired. Plan ahead by designating a sober driver or arranging a safe ride home. Do not allow friends or loved ones to drive if they have been drinking. A single poor decision can lead to devastating consequences that impact families forever.

We also encourage motorists to slow down, avoid distractions, wear seatbelts, and remain alert for other drivers, pedestrians, and emergency personnel on the roadways. This weekend has the potential for heavy rains and possible thunderstorms.

As we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating seniors, let’s work together to keep our community safe. We want everyone to enjoy the weekend and return home safely.

Have a safe and responsible Memorial Day Weekend.
