In 2001, World Milk Day was established by the United Nations to help recognize and raise awareness of the importance of milk as a global food.

It was also designed as a way to help celebrate those in the dairy sector.

The benefits of milk and dairy products have been actively promoted around the world, including how dairy supports the livelihoods of one billion people.

Indeed, dairy products and production are a vital part of the economy of our Commonwealth!

June is recognized as National Dairy Month, and there is no better place to celebrate that than right here in Pennsylvania!

Pennsylvania dairy matters, not only for good nutrition and better health, but for the fact that it also is very important for a strong economy in our Commonwealth.

It is estimated that value of Pennsylvania's dairy industry exceeds FIFTEEN BILLION DOLLARS annually and is responsible for over FIFTY FIVE THOUSAND JOBS.

Happy Dairy Month! A great time to enjoy a cold glass of milk or some cheese or some fresh ice cream!

Tomorrow is the first day of June and marks the beginning of Men's Health Month.

Too often, the men in our lives do not take the time to have a full medical exam, or choose not to seek attention for medical issues they may be facing. They may have grown up in a time when the solution to an injury was "rub some dirt on it". I recently spoke with a friend of mine, who played football at CMU and even had a try-out with the Steelers, who noted the concussions that he had. My husband told me that a "bell ringer" was a badge of honor, when we now know that such could be a basis for brain injury. Studies addressing CTE have shown how, way too often, sports injuries, especially to the head, are ignored.

Men---take care of yourselves! Don't ignore warning signs, and take the time for a complete medical examination!

Everyone---please encourage the men, be they young or old, in your lives to have a full medical examination, and to seek diagnosis and treatment if they are suffering any maladies

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

This is seen as a time when people around the nation can and should be having conversations about their own cognitive health, and the cognitive health of those they care about.

It is difficult to do, but we must be discussing cognitive health with friends, family members, and health care providers. Because Alzheimer’s develops over time (often over many years), too often we think the signs of Alzheimer's is simply someone "getting old".

Please take the time to learn more about this condition, and steps that can be taken to lessen the effects. A healthy lifestyle and "exercises", to strengthen one's cognitive abilities, are ways that can help.

Tomorrow is the beginning of the month of June.

Among other recognitions, June is National PTSD Awareness Month.

Post-traumatic stress disorder can occur in people after they have experienced a particularly traumatic event. We most commonly associate it with our Veterans, who have lived through the unfathomable horrors of war. However, anyone who has experienced a traumatic event, such as a violent physical or sexual assault, can be victims of PTSD.

I have always been particularly concerned about the experiences of our first responders, who are there witnessing severe injury or death, as they respond to fires, accidents, shootings, and whatever else.

Too often, those who experience PTSD do not take steps to address the problem. For many, they feel there is a stigma attached to seeking mental help. They choose to ignore the problem and suffer through it, rather than using the resources that are available.
I know Veterans who do not want to discuss their experiences, I know volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel who have had to handle burned or decomposing bodies. Horrific experiences, things that must have a lasting impact.

If you or someone you know is suffering from PTSD, please know that resources are available. Encourage that person to take advantage of counseling and treatment programs
