Beginning July 1, 2026, a 1% Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) will take effect in Coralville, Iowa City, and North Liberty, after being approved by voters in November 2025. The City has a guide for local businesses on what LOST is, who must collect it, how to collect it, and more. Businesses are advised to update their point-of-sale systems to reflect the new rate to take effect July 1, 2026. To see the full guide, visit www.coralville.org/LOST.

Most cities in Iowa have a voter-approved local option sales tax. Many essential items will not be taxed under LOST—like groceries, rent, utilities, and prescription drugs—as they are exempt from sales tax, which helps minimize the impact on vulnerable households.

Starting July 1, 2026, a new 1% Local Option Sales Tax takes effect in Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Shueyville, and Oxford, bringing the total sales tax rate to 7%.

For most businesses, getting ready means updating point-of-sale systems, online checkout settings, and accounting software ahead of the change. Each city has published guidance to help local businesses implement it smoothly.

The sooner businesses review their city's guidance and connect with their accounting or software providers, the smoother the transition will be.

Starting July 1, 2026, several utility fees will change as part of the City's new fiscal year budget. These were approved by the City Council this spring following a budget review and public hearing for the FY2027 budget.

Rate changes happen, when necessary, as part of the annual budget process to ensure fees align with the cost of providing reliable, quality services to our community.

Here's what's changing:
📌 Utility bill late fee—10% of the total utility bill, rather than 10% of the water fees (this will make the late fee consistent with surrounding communities).
📌 Monthly trash cart fee—increase of $0.83 for 35-gallon carts, and increase of $1.50 for 65-gallon carts (unchanged since 2009).
📌 Utility deposit for residential rental properties—this helps cover the cost of final utility bills (unchanged since 2007).
📌 Monthly water rates—increase of $3.25 for the first 200 cubic feet of use, and increase of $0.25 for each additional 100 cubic feet.
📌 Bulky trash item curbside pickup (appliances, furniture, TVs, tires, etc.)—this will make fees consistent with surrounding communities and help cover landfill fees.

Transit reminder: With the threat of severe weather today (Wednesday, June 10, 2026) and this week, be weather-aware and plan ahead.

⚠️ If the outdoor storm warning sirens sound and impact Coralville Transit service areas, Coralville Transit will remove all buses from service. Each bus will head to shelter for those on board.

🚏 If you are waiting at a bus stop and the outdoor warning sirens sound, take shelter as you normally would during a weather emergency. Do not wait outside in severe weather.

⏯️ If buses are suspended due to weather, service resumes once a warning has been lifted or expired, and once it is safe to start again.

⛈️ If storms quickly become severe, it may limit advance notice of changes to service, so plan ahead for the possibility of severe weather.

Questions? Call Coralville Transit at 319.248.1790.

🌮 Tacos have ingredients. ⛈️ Storms have ingredients.

However you like your tacos, it’s important to know the difference between a weather watch and a warning.

A watch means all the ingredients necessary for a weather event are available, and you should keep an eye out. A warning means that a weather event is here or near, and you should take shelter.

With a chance of storms in the weekend forecast, stay weather aware in queso things get spicy.
