I wanted to share a quick update on some of the work we’ve been doing recently related to economic development in our township.

At the March board meeting, I brought forward an informational packet on Brownfield Redevelopment Authorities (BRA) as a potential tool to help us encourage reinvestment and make progress on some of our underutilized properties.

While attending the MTA Capital Conference last week with our clerk, Andi Knapp, we had the chance to sit in on several sessions focused on redevelopment, funding, and tools available to local communities—many of which could be relevant for us.

Tomorrow, Bruce Deur, Andi Knapp, and I will be attending a networking breakfast with the Montcalm Economic Alliance and The Right Place to better understand what support and opportunities may exist at the county and regional level.

There’s still a lot to learn, but I’m excited about the potential here and what it could mean for the future of our community.

I want to take a moment to clear up some confusion and help bring our conversations back to a constructive place.

Recently, my attorney issued a small number of legal letters in response to specific online statements that were determined to be factually false and potentially harmful. These letters were not directed at residents who were sharing opinions, asking questions, participating in township matters, or engaging in healthy public dialogue. Those things are, and always will be, an important part of our community and our democratic process.

I also understand that some public posts have created uncertainty about what these letters mean. To be clear:
• They are standard legal correspondence, not court orders.
• They do not restrict anyone from engaging in township business or community discussions.
• They address specific false claims, not general disagreement or criticism.

My hope moving forward is that we can all refocus on what brings us together: taking care of Maple Valley Township, supporting one another, and engaging in conversations that are rooted in facts, respect, and the shared goal of improving our community.

I will not be debating legal matters online, and any specific questions should be directed to my attorney. My commitment remains serving this township with integrity, transparency, and the belief that even in disagreement, we can choose respect and community first.

Thank you to everyone who continues to engage in ways that move us forward.

Now that 2024 tax season is wrapped up, I have exciting news to share about what I’ve been working on!

As of today, we will be officially live with taking online payments for taxes. Since the county collects delinquent property taxes, this means that most residents will be able to start using this service beginning July 1st, when we kick-off the 2025 tax season. However, if you have delinquent personal property taxes you could go online and pay those starting tomorrow.

By June 15th, we will be able to accept online, in person, and over the phone payments for taxes, community center rentals, zoning applications, and cemetery purchases as well.

I’m happy to be able to implement and offer these new options to our township residents and the community at large, and I hope they provide added convenience, especially with how busy life can get.

PSA from the treasurer!

Have you received your 2024 winter tax bill? Did you double check all of the details?

I discovered that the tax roll that was imported prior to my term start was not imported correctly which has resulted in some issues with the tax bills that were disseminated by our printing company. The tax roll has been corrected, but unfortunately it means we still have a lot of fixing to do on the bills at the individual taxpayer level.

Specific scenario examples include that I’ve seen in multiples the last 2 weeks:
- You bought a home in the township in 2024 but the bill went to the previous owner
- You sold your home in the township in 2024 but still received a bill
- You have had a vet exemption in the past but it didn’t get applied properly resulting in your escrow paying an unadjusted bill and your mortgage went up
- Your PRE disappeared
- You made updates to your contact information and old information was on your bill
- You didn’t receive a bill at all

I’ve been responding to calls and emails as quickly as I can, I ask for grace and patience because the volume I’ve been receiving is overwhelming. I’ll be in the office as much as possible this week, and my deputy Sherri will be in on Friday from 9am-5pm if you would like to stop in and check things or pay your bill.

Feel free to email or call me with questions, or if you need your tax bill reissued.
