On May 8, the Copiague Middle School social studies department hosted its fourth annual Civics Fair, highlighting student voice, civic engagement and community problem solving. More than 40 students participated in the event, presenting projects focused on important school and local community issues.
As part of the New York State Civic Readiness initiative, all seventh grade social studies students complete a Civic Capstone Project in which they research a local issue meaningful to them through background research, interviews and surveys. Students then develop action plans designed to address the issues they explored.
The projects featured at the Civics Fair were selected by a committee of teachers in recognition of their outstanding work, creativity and thoughtful research. In addition to the Capstone presentations, the social studies department also sponsored a Civic Readiness Poster Contest, where students designed posters addressing school and community concerns. Members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s Fishing Club recently took part in an exciting and educational fly fishing trip to Connetquot River State Park Preserve. Accompanied by Mr. Garcia and Mr. Travis, students had the unique opportunity to experience the sport of fly fishing firsthand while exploring one of Long Island’s most scenic natural environments. The trip was made possible through a partnership with Trout Unlimited, whose members provided guidance and expertise throughout the day.
Students were outfitted with waders, fly rods and lures, and were paired with experienced fly fishing guides who taught them the fundamentals of the sport. A designated section of the Connetquot River was reserved for the group, allowing students to practice their skills as they successfully caught both rainbow and brook trout. The hands-on experience not only introduced students to a new outdoor activity, but also fostered an appreciation for nature, conservation and the local environment.

Students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School showcased their creativity and talent at the 2026 Long Island Media Arts Show, an educational conference and juried exhibition for high school visual arts students held in collaboration with Five Towns College. This year, a group of students in visual arts teacher Crystal Gray’s animation class earned an honorable mention for their outstanding work.
The recognition highlights the continued growth and success of the school’s animation program, as students demonstrated their skills in digital media, storytelling and visual design. Their achievement reflects both their dedication to their craft and the strength of the program’s curriculum.
In addition to the group honor, Rocsi Ramirez and Mia Robles were each awarded scholarships to Five Towns College, where they may choose to pursue studies in interactive media arts. This prestigious opportunity underscores their exceptional talent and commitment to their artistic development.
“We are incredibly proud of our students for their accomplishments,” said Gray. “Their recognition at this year’s Media Arts Show is a testament to their creativity, hard work and the supportive learning environment we strive to provide.”
