As we enter the final week of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support during our very first Annual Paint the Coast Purple campaign across Coos and Curry counties. Seeing our local businesses, leaders, and community members unite for survivors has been nothing short of inspiring. 🥹

Meet Karla! Karla has served our community as our DHS Co-Located Advocate, Outreach Advocate Lead, and Spanish Speaking Advocate at The SAFE Project for over 10 years; providing vital, accessible support and empowerment for survivors across Coos County.

❓ What is one thing you wish the general community understood about supporting survivors?

"Leaving an abusive relationship is extremely complex, dangerous, and not as simple as just leaving. They leave when they are ready to do so."

❓ What is an important way to support survivors?

"One way of supporting is to restore choice and control. Abuse and violence are rooted in a total loss of power. Rebuilding self-power happens in tiny daily decisions."

❓ What gives you hope or keeps you dedicated to this work?

"Witnessing a survivor reclaim their personal autonomy, rebuild their life and discover inner strength provides deep hope in the work I do."

If you are looking for a safe, confidential space to connect and heal, please join us for our last TREM group being offered in 2026.

Wednesdays at 1:00pm starting November 4th, 2026. Perfect for anyone in Coos or Curry County who prefers to join virtually.

Meet Sarah! Sarah serves as our Shelter Advocate in Curry County at The SAFE Project, providing a safe harbor, compassionate care, and vital support to individuals and families navigating some of their most vulnerable moments in our emergency shelters.

❓ What does supporting shelter clients in Curry County mean to you in your daily work?

"Working in our emergency shelters means showing up for individuals and families when they are at their most vulnerable. In Curry County, isolation and limited resources can make everything feel overwhelming. Being a steady presence, offering a listening ear, and letting clients know they are safe and believed right here in their own community is the heart of why I do this work."

❓ As we approach Purple Thursday, what message do you have for our community?

"As we get closer to Purple Thursday, I would love to see our community in Curry come together and wear purple on Thursday, October 22, to show support for survivors of domestic violence and help bring awareness to an issue that affects so many people and families. Wearing purple may seem like a small thing, but seeing people throughout our communities participate sends a message that survivors are seen, believed, and supported. So on October 22, wear something purple, encourage your friends, family, and coworkers to join you, and help us turn Curry and Coos County purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month!" 🫟

❓ Outside of your work as an advocate, what grounds you or brings you joy?

"Outside of work, I am a wife and mom, and spending time with my family is really important to me. I also enjoy reading, being outside, and spending time at the river or along the coast. Those are the things that help me relax and recharge." 🌊

Almost all of our FREE Paint the Coast Purple Starter Kits have been claimed and delivered! If you or your business want one to purple-out your space for October, contact us right away to snag yours before our remaining supply runs out.

🫟 Don't need a full kit? Pick up one of our FREE SAFE Project window decals (pictured in post). Place one on office door, bathroom mirror, or shop-front window. Every decal you place lets survivors in our community know that support is all around them and they are never alone. Visibility + Support = Safety!
