On June 19 Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War was over. President Abraham Lincoln ended slavery on January 1, 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation.

On June 12th Anne Frank received a diary for her 13th birthday.
Anne’s diary was published in 1947 and the book has been translated into more than 75 languages.

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), and the children’s book world, is saddened by the news that author, mentor and friend, Jane Yolen, has died. She was 87 and her loss cannot be measured.

June 5 George Bernard Shaw left his job at the Edison Telephone Company to focus on his writing.
He wrote over 60 plays in his lifetime and is the only person to be awarded a Nobel Prize and an Academy Award.
