This is not a political post—it’s an American people’s post.
Whether we agree or disagree on how our government got here, the reality is simple: we are facing a government shutdown that will impact Americans in many ways—especially the most vulnerable among us.
Everyone is talking about SNAP (food stamp) benefits possibly being put on hold-and yes, that is a major concern. But what we aren’t talking about is the trickle-down effect this will have on many more than those receiving government benefits:
• When families lose food assistance, they can’t purchase as much.
• Grocery stores sell less (just one example) so staff get fewer hours.
• Those workers then have less to spend at restaurants, retail stores, and gas stations.
• Vendors who supply those stores lose revenue.
• Small businesses start cutting hours or staff so less money goes into the economy overall
• Landlords and utility companies see higher nonpayment rates.
• And before long, entire communities feel the ripple.
This goes far beyond hunger. We’ll see families living without electricity or heat as winter sets in, and more people unable to afford rising rent and basic needs in an economy where prices have skyrocketed far beyond inflation over the past few years.
At Helping Hands of Putnam County, we see these effects every day-long before headlines mention them.
Every 20 minutes, which is why we REQUIRE appointments, our incredible team faces heartbreaking choices:
Does the handicapped senior need it more?
The single mom with three kids?
The dad working two jobs but still falling short?
The family whose home just burnt down?
The person who has always done everything right, never asked for assistance, but just had a stroke and is learning their new normal?
We weigh every request carefully because our funds must go toward true emergencies-rent, utilities, prescriptions, ect. We do our best to always have plenty of food on hand for those in NEED. Though that is even scary for us right now. But what we can’t sustain is a growing number of families who simply don’t have enough to get through the month every month.
This season will require real adjustments from all of us. Families may need to share homes, take extra jobs, or shift work schedules to make ends meet. Employers-please, if you have job openings, fill them. Please also do not advertise and waste people’s time if you do not actually have the position available. There are people ready and willing to work.
This is not about politics. It’s about people. The less divided we are and the more we act together as Americans, the stronger we will stand through this.
