Meet Your 2026 Top Dog: Stella! 🐾

The wait is over! After an incredible group of pups competed in this year’s Top Dog contest, we are excited to announce Stella as your 2026 Cookeville Leisure Services Top Dog!

Stella is 100% deaf and is the FIRST DEAF DOG IN THE WORLD to learn to play a video game for dogs! She’s an Alpha Tester for a group of researchers bringing an enrichment video game to market. She also currently holds the record for fastest slatmill dog in Cookeville at 45.3 mph.

But the most impressive thing about Stella is everything she has overcome.

Stella was found locked in a hot car in Nashville at just 3 months old and nearly died. A police officer had to smash a window to save her and later adopted her. After being surrendered to CPCAS and adopted and returned two more times, Stella finally found her forever home.

Her first year and a half with her new family was challenging as she worked through severe food aggression, resource guarding, endless energy and difficulty connecting with humans. Through patience, studying behavior, training and eventually anxiety medication, Stella began to thrive.

Today, Stella knows sign language, loves learning new tricks, is trained for recall with a vibrating collar and participates in scent work, FastCAT, weight pull, barn hunt, hiking, rock climbing and weekly slatmill sessions. Most importantly, she is the happiest she’s ever been.

We are so proud to celebrate Stella and all that she has overcome! Congratulations to Stella and her family on being named the 2026 Cookeville Leisure Services Top Dog!

✨ LEISURE LOOKBACK ✨

The annual Fall Fun Fest has been one of the crown jewels of the City Square for over 30 years! Each September, Cookeville’s local artists, vendors, and other businesses fill the streets with good food, good music, and good times. From face painting to fried Oreos, the Fall Fun Fest is the weekend center of community and entertainment for Cookeville. Share your favorite memories of the Fall Fun Fest down below!

Originally scheduled to close this week, a delay in the delivery of materials has pushed the re-surfacing work at the Heart of the City Playground at Dogwood Park to close beginning September 28 for the improvements.

The project is still expected to take approximately six weeks, weather and project conditions permitting. The playground will remain closed throughout the project to allow the work to be completed safely.

We appreciate your patience as we make improvements to this community space!

When the playground is ready to reopen, an announcement will be made on the Cookeville Leisure Services page.

2nd Place: Raaj!

The Top Dog countdown continues!

Congratulations to Ayessa Baquilar and Raaj, our 2nd place winners in the Top Dog 2026 contest!

Meet Raaj! He is a miniature dachshund who LOVES to sunbathe. He's 4 now but is very much still my little baby. He loves to run around and pick up golf balls where we walk. He's got a growing collection now! Fun fact, we go to the Tennessee Dachshund Rescue dachtobefest and have entered the weenier dog race. The first year he got 3rd and the last 2 years, he's gotten 1st place. So he's a runner, he's a track star! He's a sweet boy for sure! He will love on you and snuggle you! Especially if you have food on you!!

Help us congratulate Raaj and Ayessa on their 2nd place finish! 🐾

3rd Place: Bean!

The Top Dog countdown continues!

Congratulations to Amanda Madewell and Bean, our 3rd place winners in the Top Dog 2026 contest!

Bean is a 9 year old American Bulldog/boxer mix. Her journey started as a three time returned puppy bc no one knew she was deaf. She was to be euthanized on a Monday and we adopted her on the previous Saturday. She is a well tempered, loving, loyal and sign language loving baby. She recently lost her brother Solomon to cancer and has been learning a new normal for her daily life. She loves to nap, bark at leaves and help babysit her g-babies ( our two grandchildren).

Help us congratulate Bean and Amanda on their 3rd place finish! 🐾

But we’re not done yet...

Our Leisure Services pups had a ruff day at work!

For Bring Your Dog to Work Day, our four-legged coworkers stepped into the roles of their owners and took on their jobs at Leisure Services. From helping at the office to checking in on our facilities, they were ready to work hard and have a little fun along the way!

We’re counting down to Dogapalooza on September 19 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Cane Creek Dog Park. Come celebrate with us and your favorite four-legged friends!

Join us on Saturday, September 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for a free, family-friendly adventure through downtown Cookeville. Start at either the Cookeville History Museum or the Cookeville Depot Museum, pick up your entry form, and explore Broad Street while answering trivia along the way.

This month's theme highlights America's 250th Anniversary and the Declaration of Independence. Discover the significance of this historic document, learn about its signers, and test your knowledge for a chance to win a prize! Sponsored by Imagine Foundry.

Return your completed entry form by 3:30 p.m. to be entered into the prize drawing. Whether you complete one direction or both, it's a fun way to experience local and national history together.

Get creative with Shakespeare!

Join us on Saturday, September 26, at 12 p.m. at the Cookeville Public Library for a free Make & Take Shakespeare Craft. Participants of all ages are invited to meet members of the Shakespeare in the Park cast while creating their own Shakespearean ruff collar. All materials will be provided by the library.

This fun, family-friendly event is the perfect way to get excited for this year's production of All's Well That Ends Well in October. We hope to see you there!
