Foster Grandparent Program of East Central TN

Foster Grandparent Program of East Central TN Foster grandparents are volunteers who work one-on-one with children who have special or exceptional needs in the educational field. They have to love children.

The Foster Grandparent Program is about making a difference in a child’s life, but the foster grandparents get something out of it, too. This program gives volunteers a reason to get up and get out of the house each day and to meet and associate with new people. It especially gives them the opportunity to work with some children that shower them with love and acceptance. As they get older, some pe

ople think that they are no longer of any use because they are a bit slower, their health isn’t as good as it used to be and they aren’t out earning a “big wage” like they used to do. Their kids are busy doing their thing with their children or have moved to another area. They may often think, “Why am I still here?” Many seniors are “still here” to be foster grandparents. The LBJ&C Foster Grandparent Program gives them a feeling that they are needed. They have a desire to do something good and know that somebody needs them. They become attached to the children that they serve. This program bridges a generation gap and reenergizes seniors, too. The children have someone that they know will be there five days a week that they can talk to, and share things with and just know that they are loved and accepted unconditionally, no matter what. The majority of the foster grandparents are in their 70s and 80s, but they have to be at least 55. Their income has to be below 200 percent of the poverty level. They volunteer to work with the children at least 15 and as many as 40 hours a week. They do this because they care, not because they are making a lot of money. They only receive $2.65 an hour of tax-free money. This money cannot be counted as income for any benefits that they receive such as public housing, food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, TennCare, VA benefits or Social Security. The volunteers receive the tax-exempt stipend, help with transportation, one to two meals a day, training monthly and yearly physicals.

Accessing Your Health Information
A close up of a doctor working on a digital tablet in the doctors office
Are you changing doctors? Do you need your immunization records for a new school? Getting copies of your medical records can be a real challenge if you’ve seen different providers throughout your life. If you can’t easily access your medical records online, you’ll likely have to request the records from your medical provider in writing. Each one may need you to follow a different process when asking for your record.

Explore these tips on how to request your health record and know your rights.
Check your doctor's website. If you regularly visit a doctor's office, they may have details on how to request your records on their website.

Call or e-mail your doctor. By doing so, you can ask how you can request your health record.

Fill out a health or medical release form. Many doctors have a form you can fill out either online or on paper to access your information.

Pay any fees. You may have to pay for the cost of your medical records if you want them delivered on paper, by fax or electronically.

Wait up to 30 days. If your provider needs more than 30 days, they must give you a reason for the delay and a new delivery date.

Today we worked some more on commerating the 911 national day of service. The Foster Grandparent Program and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program provided a meal to the Crossville Police Department, Crossville City and County Fire Departments and the Crossville Ambulance Service to thank them for all that they do to serve their community. Firehouse Subs, and Flying Pig made it possible for us to do this by donating all or a portion of the meals provided.

Well we did it. We got our grannies back in the centers, most on August 16th and the last one on August 23rd. In one center that opened on the 16th we already have a classroom closed for COVID for 14 days.
We do have 5 grannies who are not comfortable returning due to the Delta variant at this time. They have all had the vaccine shots so we are praying that we do not have anyone get sick.
