When we say have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts, we practice what we preach.

Below are just a few of the alert notifications our public information officer received with the storms yesterday.

You can get a lot of these notifications too by making sure you can receive government alerts to your phone, signing up for CodeRED, downloading the FEMA and local weather apps, and having a NOAA weather radio.

Last night, Horry County Council passed a resolution recognizing September as National Preparedness Month, as well as the contributions to readiness and support during and after disasters by the S.C. State Guard.

National Preparedness Month serves as a great reminder and time to think about emergency plans. It is a time to gather information, make plans, build emergency kits and work towards being prepared for emergency and disaster events.

The South Carolina State Guard, like many other partner agencies, works with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division to support local emergency management operations when disaster strikes. We appreciate their dedication and support in times of need.

Take time this month to learn about the disaster risks to Horry County and get better prepared.

We might not have any storms in our forecast, but that doesn't mean preparedness stops.

We'll be at the Horry County Memorial Libraries Surfside Beach branch tomorrow at 3 p.m. for a preparedness discussion, with a special focus on emergency binders and documentation.

Sign up is required. Patrons can call the branch to sign up or visit the HCML website (hcml.sc.gov). Access the sign in sheet by going to the "events and meeting room tab," then select "upcoming events," and from there they can enter "emergency preparedness" into the search bar.

We hope to see you there!
