Who should be held accountable when a school district is struggling?

Democratic nominee for South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Sylvia Wright, is raising important questions about the state's takeover of the Marlboro County School District.

No one disputes that serious financial and governance problems existed. Investigations uncovered significant concerns that must be addressed. But Wright argues that state leaders also bear responsibility for providing oversight and support before a situation reaches the point of a full takeover.

As Wright noted, if audits were missing or showing warning signs for years, why wasn't the State Department of Education working more closely with local leaders sooner? Why were problems allowed to grow before drastic action was taken?

South Carolina students deserve strong schools, responsible leadership, and accountability at every level—not just after a crisis occurs.

We need leaders who will work with communities, support educators, identify problems early, and ensure every child has access to a quality public education.

Our students deserve solutions!

"The letter included a call for the council to remove what it described as “an unethical group of corrupt leadership” and requested outside review and transparency.

Among the allegations was that HCPD has a culture of retaliation, with officers who spoke out facing isolation, investigation, or forced retirement. That allegation mirrors claims made by former Capt. Danny Furr, who filed a lawsuit in April alleging he was forced to retire after whistleblowing on department leadership.

After receiving a copy of the letter, WMBF News contacted every member of the Horry County Council to verify they received it. One member said they were unaware of the letter and had not checked their emails. Another text said they would call back, but never did. The remaining members did not respond."

An anonymous letter from officers inside the Horry County Police Department is criticizing department leadership, and the department said it never received it.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth — a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and commemorates the freedom, resilience, and enduring contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation's history.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free. Juneteenth stands as a powerful reminder that freedom, equality, and justice must never be taken for granted.

As Democrats, we honor those who fought for civil rights, voting rights, and equal opportunity, while recognizing that the work of building a more just and inclusive society continues today.

Let us celebrate freedom, reflect on our history, and recommit ourselves to the promise of liberty and justice for all.

Happy Juneteenth!
