Fourteen Years.

Today, we gather in solemn remembrance of Fire Chief Rick Schaefer, marking fourteen years since his passing. Chief Schaefer began his service to the Hopkinton Fire Department in 1979 as a volunteer firefighter. Through dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment, he rose to lead the department as Chief from 1999 until his death during a demanding shift at the Hopkinton State Fair in 2012.

This anniversary is not only a moment of reflection, but a moment of gratitude. Chief Schaefer’s leadership shaped the character of our department. His devotion strengthened the bond within our community. His example continues to guide every firefighter who steps forward to serve.

As we honor his memory, we reaffirm the values he embodied: service, courage, and quiet professionalism. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy remains deeply rooted in the Hopkinton community and in the traditions of our department.

Chief Schaefer is memorialized at the Hopkinton Fire Department’s Fallen Firefighter Memorial beside the Contoocook station, a lasting tribute to his life, his service, and his sacrifice.

From all of us at the Hopkinton Fire Department, we wish you a happy and SAFE Independence Day! 🇺🇸 🎆
