This Saturday, June 13th at 11:30am Roger will be laid in his eternal resting place at St Patrick’s Cemetery on Highmarket Rd, Constableville. Luncheon will follow at the Constableville Fire Station and all are welcome.
If you’d like to drop off food/refreshment donations prior to the cemetery service the Firehall will be open at 9am Saturday morning.

Roger joined our Fire Company in 1969 and was a 57 year life member. As a Life Member Roger may have no longer been responding when the alarm sounded; however, helped us all around the station with lots of behind the scene things and care for the station and grounds any time he could. Our heartfelt gratitude for all that you did for our community Roger! Our most sincere condolences to Bonnie, Jason and his whole family. Roger you will be missed by all. Godspeed, Rest Easy, We Will Take It From Here. 🚒🚑
Roger A. Smith
Constableville- Roger A. Smith, 75, a native and life resident of Constableville and loving husband of Bonnie, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, while surrounded by his loving wife and family, at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY.
Roger was born on April 23, 1951, a son of Francis J. “Joe” and Mary Wynne Smith. He grew up on Schuyler St., Constableville and received his education at Constableville Central School, graduating from South Lewis High School, Turin, with the Class of 1969. While in high school, he enjoyed participating on the Football and Ski teams, racing at Snow Ridge Ski Area.
In November, 1946, Roger’s father, Joe, founded F.J. Smith Trucking and Coal Company. Roger began his long and successful career in the family business as a young teenager. Later the company expanded to include all kinds of excavating, site preparation and paving. In 1990, the company was incorporated to become F.J. Smith & Sons, Inc. Roger and his family continued to operate the business, until 2003, when he retired. Afterwards, Roger was employed as a truck driver and in hay harvesting for Demko Farms.
For many years Roger served as a volunteer as a snowmobile trail groomer for Southern Tug Hill Sno-Riders, of West Leyden. Roger looked forward to each snowmobile riding season and was responsible for grooming many trails, over a wide area of the southern and central sections of Tug Hill.
On October 12, 1985, Roger was united with the love of his life, Bonnie Lastowski. Roger and Bonnie enjoyed a loving union of forty years.
Roger was a member of Boonville Elks Lodge # 2158.
Roger was a life member of the Constableville Fire Co., where he was active for over 50 years, as responder, firefighter and active in the annual Field Days and also served as a bartender at the famous Constableville Fire Co. Food Stand each year at the New York State Woodsmen’s Field Days, Boonville. When the new Constableville Fire Department building was constructed, in 1989, Roger was instrumental in grading the site and transformed the location from an uneven swampy area into the location it is today, complete with the field day grounds and a baseball field. For many years he volunteered his services in wintertime snow removal at the firehall.
Roger was loved in his community of Constableville and far beyond. He will be fondly remembered as a person who was always willing to help anyone and thrived from being good and generous to his family and community. In keeping with his wife, Bonnie and his family’s heritage, Roger truly loved and served his fellowman.
Over the years, Roger found special enjoyment in watching his granddaughter, Grace participate in Soccer, Volley Ball and Soft Ball games, at South Lewis Central School.
In addition to his loving wife, Bonnie, Roger is survived by a son, Jason, Constableville; two sisters, Sharon Kelly, Troy, NY and Susan (Brad) Billhardt, Turin; a brother, Randy Smith, Constableville; a grandson, Connor Ernst, Denver, Colorado, granddaughter, Grace Smith, Lowville; his mother in law, Vera Lastowski, Boonville; brother and sister in law, Thomas and Jackie Lastowski, Boonville, Ray and Mary Pfendler, Boonville and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends, scattered over a very wide area. Roger was predeceased by his parents, one daughter, Kimberly and a sister and brother in law, Shirley and Bruce Remillard.
His Funeral will be on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 5:00 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where calling hours are also on Sunday, from 1:00 P.M. until the services. Members of Constableville Fire Department will call in a group on Sunday, at 4:00 P.M., at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Memorial contributions may be made to Constableville Volunteer Fire Company, P.O.
