Before Children's Safe Harbor, there was a maze of confusion for traumatized and abused children and their non-offending family members. In the past, our average client - a 7 year old girl - may have had to tell her story 8 or 9 times to an adult (parent, teacher, counselor, children's protective services caseworker, police officer, nurse, prosecutor) before she could get the help she needed and s

top abuse. Efforts to help her were inadvertently adding to her pain as she was required to repeat the embarrassing and painful details of abuse and trauma over and over to different grown-ups. Unwittingly, the traumatized child began to feel that they weren't doing a good job of telling their story and that the perpetrator must be right - that they were at fault for the bad things that have happened to them. Children's Safe Harbor has changed this journey by creating a safe and child-friendly place that coordinates all of the professionals mandated to respond to child abuse. This multi-disciplinary, co-located team approach prioritizes children throughout the process and facilitates healing and justice for children.
