What a wonderful day at The Big Chili Cook Off Evergreen today! A huge thank you to everyone who came out, who volunteered, and who participated. Our Honor Guard opened the festivities, we served tons of chili, FF Huber competed in the Firefighter Challenge, and our amazing chefs won 2nd place in the People’s Choice voting for the Veggie Chili category.

We’ll see you all again next year!

The Elk Creek Wildland Fire Module is on the USDA Forest Service - San Juan National Forest working on the Swiss Roll Fire. We wish them, and all engaged with this fire, safety and success throughout this assignment!

The Elk Creek Fire team showed up in force today to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11. We wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments shared prior to the climb that showing up when needed for each other is what counts. You all are our tribe and we are blessed to serve you alongside our brothers and sisters in their communities. Never forget how neighbors supported neighbors, boat captains came en masse to evacuate hundreds of thousands from Manhattan, and workers toiled for months to search the debris and provide closure to those who lost loved ones. The best of us arises when crises arrive. 🇺🇸🗽❤️🇺🇸

PARK COUNTY RESIDENTS:

Wildfire risk is rising in Park County. Clearing brush, trees, and other fuels close to your home, called Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) mitigation, is one of the most effective ways to protect your house.

Here’s what we’re proposing:

FAPCo and the Park County Fire Protection Districts will apply for a grant that would cover 50% of the cost of eligible mitigation work on your property.

You’d hire an approved contractor and pay them directly.

Once the work is done and verified, you’d be reimbursed for half the cost.

Grouping neighboring properties together lets contractors work efficiently and keeps costs down for everyone, which is why we’re asking about your neighborhood as well as your property.

Your answers help us gauge interest, check eligibility, and plan projects by area. Nothing here commits you to participating.

On Friday, July 24, wildland firefighter Nathan Matthews, 43, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died from injuries sustained while responding to the Knowles Fire in western Colorado on June 27. Nate had been receiving medical care for burn injuries sustained during the incident.

Nate was a dedicated member of the Rifle Helitack crew out of Colorado and was one of five firefighters involved in a burnover during initial attack operations. Three firefighters – Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson – died at the scene.

Elk Creek Fire joins our wildland fire family in mourning yet another loss among our firefighting community this year. We hold Nathan's family, friends, and fellow crew members in our hearts. Rest well, Nathan.

On July 8th, Conifer Fire Dept, Elk Creek Fire, the Conifer Wildland Division, and community partners presented on wildfire preparedness, emergency notifications, evacuation planning, and practical actions you can take before an emergency occurs. The video of that presentation is now up on CFD's channel and our website if you'd like to watch it, rewatch it, or share it with those who weren't able to attend.
