Do you know a teen who’s interested in a future career in law enforcement? Applications are open for our Cadet Program!

This program is an educational and mentoring program for teens age 14-19 where they’ll meet monthly with our officers to learn more about opportunities in law enforcement. Cadets learn to conduct traffic stops, practice investigating cases, write reports, build job interview skills, gain leadership experience, boost confidence, and more.

9/9/26 at 8:45 a.m. UPDATE: Morehead Road is now reopened.


A single-vehicle crash involving a dump truck has caused Morehead Road to be closed between Concord Parkway South and Victory Lane.

Duke Energy is aware of the incident and is sending crews to the area to replace damaged utility poles. The road will be closed for several hours, please use caution and avoid the area is possible.

This special ceremony takes place annually at Concord Fire Station 8, the location of the City's 9/11 memorial rock and maple trees, both representing the selfless sacrifice of life made by hundreds of firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency personnel, and everyday heroes, and the lasting symbol of the strength and forbearance of the American Spirit.

Today, we remember and honor the life of City of Concord Patrolman William J. Kearns who made the ultimate sacrifice and was killed in the line of duty on September 2, 1899.

Patrolman Kearns was returning to duty at the railroad depot when he encountered a group of three men who were causing a disturbance on West Depot Street (present day Cabarrus Avenue West). He was tragically shot and killed by one of the men while attempting to arrest the suspects.

Patrolman Kearns' heroic actions and sacrifice in service to our community will never be forgotten.

Our SROs do more than keep our schools safe. They build trust, mentor students, support staff, and help create a positive learning environment every single day. From greeting students in the morning, to lunchtime interactions, and safely seeing students off at the end of the day, their presence makes a lasting impact on our schools and our community. 🚔❤️🏫

Case Update: The suspect wanted in connection with the 2008 murder of Donna Barnhardt and Darrell Noles, commonly known as the Sun Drop Murders, was extradited from Washington State and taken into custody by the Concord Police Department earlier this morning. The 43-year-old suspect, Johnny Steven Talbert, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder (N.C.G.S. 14-17) and one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon (N.C.G.S. 14-87). He is currently being held in the Cabarrus County Jail without bond.

Following today’s arrest, Concord Police Chief Jimmy Hughes made the following statement:

"While nothing can take away the pain and heavy burden the families have carried for the last 18 years, today our community rests a little easier knowing that we have our suspect in custody and we are one step closer to bringing justice to Donna, Darrell, and their families.

Our priority is the victims and their families, and our focus is on ensuring the case continues through the judicial system fairly and without compromise. We will continue to respect the privacy of the families during this difficult time and will not be making additional comments and no further information will be released.”

As part of our promise to work together with our residents to achieve the highest standards of public safety, we’re pursuing North Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation (NCLEA).

As part of this process, we'll undergo an assessment on September 9, 2026, to ensure that our department meets established professional standards.

The accreditation process evaluates various aspects of law enforcement operations, including policies and procedures, administration, support services, training, facilities management, safety, and record-keeping. These standards are crucial for maintaining high-quality public safety services.

We invite the community to provide feedback on our adherence to NCLEA's standards. Comments should be submitted via email or mail by September 8, 2026, one day before the on-site assessment. All feedback will be reviewed by the Assessment Team.
