This is one of our soft-released squirrels, raised in our care and now living wild nearby, still close enough to spot every so often. Moments like this are exactly why we do this work.

Today's the last day! Orders for our fall mum sale close tonight.

Five colors, two sizes, and every single dollar goes straight to caring for the animals in our facility through the remainder of the year.

$12 for an 8-inch, $24 for a 12-inch. Local pickup, and these beautiful blooms come from a local family nursery, so even the growing stays close to home.

Last night, while Cabarrus County slept, 86,300 birds were in flight at once. Peaking around 9:20pm, moving at up to 21 mph, some climbing to 2,100 feet. By morning, an estimated 6,071,000 birds had crossed the region to date.

This week, we’re introducing who’s actually passing through: Yellow Warbler, American Redstart, Magnolia Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, and Chimney Swift — six species confirmed moving through our skies right now.

Every photo in this series comes from local wildlife photographer Ron Frye ( RLF Captures ), who’s been out capturing these birds as they pass through our area. We’re grateful for his eye and his generosity in sharing this work with us.

One of our home rehabbers sent this update on an eastern box turtle mid-burrow, exactly the kind of natural behavior we love to see. Fingers crossed for a homecoming release later this week.

They didn’t choose to need help.

An owl with a broken wing. An opossum who lost her way. A turtle who wandered too close to the road. None of them asked for this, and none of them are facing it alone.

That’s what today is for: noticing the wildlife right in our own backyards, not just the rare or the remarkable, and being grateful for everyone who shows up when it matters. Our volunteers. Our donors. Our neighbors who call the hotline instead of walking away.

One small team. One strong community. Every species welcome, every one of you appreciated.

Wild doesn’t mean alone. Thank you for being part of this with us. Happy National Wildlife Day.
