What is an Extended Learning Opportunity?
An Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) is a credit-bearing learning experience that takes place outside the classroom setting. Through ELOs, students work toward mastering skills, knowledge, and competencies using mechanisms such as private instruction, independent study, internships, apprenticeships, and more.
ELOs are designed to align with student interests and are developed in collaboration with community partners, including employers, postsecondary institutions, nonprofit organizations, and individuals who provide the environment and experiences necessary for students to complete their ELO.
An ELO Coordinator or designated educator within a school ensures that each ELO is rigorous and aligned with required competencies. During an ELO, students engage in research, reflection, and specific projects, culminating in a presentation of their learning to their ELO team. This team typically includes the student, educator, ELO coordinator, parent or guardian, and community partner.
Each school district in New Hampshire is required to have a policy and procedure for ELOs. For specific information on how to get started, please reach out to your school district, or learn more at: https://www.education.nh.gov/partners/education-outside-classroom/extended-learning-opportunities
