β₯οΈ Like this post if you have heard the term "whole grain," but are not quite sure what that actually means! (You're not alone, we promise!)
A whole grain just means that all three parts of the grain (bran, germ, and endosperm) are included. A refined grain only contains the endosperm.
This is important because:
π The bran is the fiber filled layer that includes B Vitamins, Iron, Zinc, Magnesium, Copper, antioxidants and phytochemicals
π The germ is the nutrient packed core that contains B Vitamins, Vitamin E, antioxidants, phytochemicals and healthy fats.
If you are skipping the whole grain option, you are missing out on all of those key vitamins and nutrients! This doesn't mean that everything you eat has to be whole grain, but it is easy to switch out some refined options for this nutritious counterpart!
