β™₯️ Like this post if you have heard the term "whole grain," but are not quite sure what that actually means! (You're not alone, we promise!)

A whole grain just means that all three parts of the grain (bran, germ, and endosperm) are included. A refined grain only contains the endosperm.

This is important because:
🍞 The bran is the fiber filled layer that includes B Vitamins, Iron, Zinc, Magnesium, Copper, antioxidants and phytochemicals
🍞 The germ is the nutrient packed core that contains B Vitamins, Vitamin E, antioxidants, phytochemicals and healthy fats.

If you are skipping the whole grain option, you are missing out on all of those key vitamins and nutrients! This doesn't mean that everything you eat has to be whole grain, but it is easy to switch out some refined options for this nutritious counterpart!

It's that time of year again! The UNH Nutrition Program is recruiting community members to participate in our UNH Nutrition and Wellness Program.

This free, 10-week nutrition counseling/education program offers our senior Wellness students the opportunity to work with a β€˜client’ on a weekly basis, helping them make progress towards their nutrition/wellness-related goals. In addition to the weekly meetings (in-person and virtual available), β€˜clients’ have the option of participating in a pre- and post-program health risk screening (blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood glucose, body composition, measured resting metabolic rate, and skin carotenoid levels) at no cost. Students will be supervised by our fabulous clinical faculty and registered dietitian, Prof Kevin Pietro, MS RD LD.

If you are interested, please send us a note at [email protected] (and reference this Facebook post). Or help us out by sharing with your networks! And don't delay - this program typically fills quick!

Nutrition Connections - UNH Extension has been offering cooking classes to clients at White Horse Recovery each week, by cooking over the fire. Today everyone cooked indoors since the firewood was still wet. The pizza, kale chips, eggplant chips, and cooked pears were delicious. Everything but the dough, cheese, and pepperoni came from the garden.

I have heard so many families share that the increased cash value benefit has been helpful. Fruits and veggies, especially the fresh kind, can be expensive for families. If we want people to eat healthier, we should reduce or eliminate barriers that prevent them from buying healthy food. -Althea, WIC Nutritionist

Happy !

Today's food safety tip is to always separate raw foods from cooked foods. You'll also want to use separate cooking utensils, cutting boards and plates for raw and cooked foods.

To learn more about separating foods, visit this website from the CDC ➑️ https://www.cdc.gov/foodsafety/keep-food-safe.html
