A huge congratulations to Jonze Geldhof, who graduated from Comstock Park High School tonight! Jonze was our 2025-2026 school year work-study intern, and as of last night's Alpine Township board meeting, is also our newest department member at the rank of cadet!

Jonze is a hard working, motivated young man, who will do great things along his public safety career! He starts EMT school in June, and will start the fire academy in October.

Congrats to Jonze and all the graduates out there!

One of the lesser‑known but impactful programs within our department is the Work‑Based Learning Program in partnership with Comstock Park Schools. Through this program, high school students gain meaningful, real‑world experience while exploring public service and career pathways.

This school year, we were proud to host Jonze Geldhof, a Comstock Park senior, as a work‑based learning intern with the Alpine Township Fire Department. As highlighted in a recent School News Network article, Jonze spent the 2025–2026 school year embedded with our department—participating in training activities and gaining firsthand exposure to the day‑to‑day responsibilities of the fire service.

Jonze will be graduating this month and plans to continue his fire service journey with us by starting EMT training this summer, followed by the Fire Academy this fall. His experience is a great example of how early exposure, mentorship, and hands‑on learning can help shape the next generation of public safety professionals.

We are grateful for the partnership with Comstock Park Public Schools and their commitment to preparing students for successful futures. Programs like this not only benefit students but also strengthen our community and the future of the fire service.

Now in its third year, the program has provided more than 60 students the opportunity to trade credit hours for hands-on experience developing career skills.

We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Fire Chief Russell “Rusty” Shoultz of the City of Walker Fire Department early this morning.

Chief Shoultz made a tremendous impact on the Walker Fire Department during his short tenure, making meaningful strides to move the organization forward and position it for continued progress. He was deeply dedicated to the fire service and spoke often of how much he loved the work and the people who serve within it.

This is a profound loss for the community and for the fire service as a whole. Chief Shoultz’s legacy will live on through those he led, mentored, and worked alongside throughout his career.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Chief Shoultz’s family and with the men and women of the Walker Fire Department as they navigate this difficult time.
