Family Promise of Greater Denver is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization independently affiliated with a national organization founded in 1988 and comprised of more than 180 affiliates in 41 states. This model partners with diverse, faith congregations to provide shelter and hospitality. Family Promise of Greater Denver began serving homeless families in November of 1997 with 10 host congregations an

d four support congregations. We now have two rotations with 21 host congregations, 42 support congregations, and two civic groups. We also focused on self-sufficiency, offering support services such as case management, family advocacy, life skills classes and access to community resources to help each family to improve their financial condition and obtain stable housing. The road was not easy for this family new to the United States.
Every single day, both parents worked long hours delivering food, driving through rain, snow, and exhaustion so their children could have a better future. At night, they returned to shelter, still praying and believing that stability was possible.

With perseverance, community support, and help securing five-year work permits, they moved from shelter into their own apartment and into permanent jobs in the local community. What once felt temporary has become a safe, stable home for their two children.

Their story is a powerful reminder that when families are given support, opportunity, and encouragement, they don’t just survive—they thrive.

When you think of homelessness, you might picture freezing winter nights. But for families without stable housing, summer nights can be just as dangerous. Cars turn into ovens. Sidewalks stay hot well after sunset. And children trying to sleep in unfamiliar places cannot rest.

One missed paycheck. One medical bill. One moment can change everything for a Denver family.

Family Promise of Greater Denver’s Rental Assistance program steps in before families reach that breaking point—providing one-time rental support so parents and kids can stay safely housed and avoid the trauma of homelessness. Thanks to community support, 58 families have been prevented from eviction and 47 children have avoided homelessness, at an average cost of about $1,000 per family.

Prevention is one of the most cost-effective ways to end homelessness, and the need is growing in the Denver Metro area, where rent control is banned and housing hasn’t kept up with demand.
