Strengthening Professional Ties & Advancing Community Impact

This morning at the beautiful Greentree Foundation, The New York Community Trust’s Long Island Office hosted its Fall Professional Advisors Forum: One Big, Beautiful Opportunity for Roth, Retirement & Estate Planning.

We were honored to be welcomed by Kofi Appenteng, the newly appointed President of the Greentree Foundation. His presence underscored the Foundation’s enduring commitment to peace, philanthropy, and sustainability—values that resonate deeply with our mission.

The forum featured a dynamic presentation from Ed Slott, CPA, America’s IRA Expert, who unpacked the latest tax code changes under OBBA 2025 and the SECURE Act. His insights into Roth conversions, IRA Trust strategies, and estate planning were invaluable for advisors navigating today’s shifting financial landscape.

We were also moved by our “Nonprofit Connection” segment with Jean Kelly, President & CEO of The Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN), who shared powerful stories of their work fighting hunger and homelessness across Long Island.

Events like these are more than educational—they’re a catalyst for collaboration, innovation, and deeper community engagement. To learn more or join us at future events, reach out to Marie Smith at [email protected].

A heartfelt thank you to our speakers, attendees, and partners for making this morning so impactful.

For years, the Knapp Swezey family dreamed of helping students in their hometowns of Patchogue-Medford and Bellport pursue higher education.

In 2023, that vision became reality through the creation of the Knapp Swezey Scholarship, administered by The Trust’s Long Island office. Lizbeth Rojo is one of the award’s many recipients who are now one step closer to achieving their dreams.

Attention Nonprofits: We are proud to be the lead sponsor of the BBB Foundation’s yearlong series Transitions. The next program, on October 9, will be in person at the Met Life Building at Grand Central, which is easily accessible by LIRR now that it comes right into GCT. The sponsor/presenter is BDO. The topic is "Leveraging AI to Manage Nonprofit Finances and Operations."

Two speakers, Cate McAleavey (David's fellow BBB Foundation board member) and Noah Mattern, will discuss AI fundamentals, risk management issues, practical applications for AI tools, and advanced uses. As this is in-person, there is a small registration fee of $25 to ensure a spot. Seating is limited. There will be plenty of time for networking and questions. Too often, students with significant behavioral challenges are met with exclusion rather than support. The New York Community Trust is proud to present a $20,000 grant to the Sunshine Prevention Center in support of its transformative Social-Emotional Learning Program for high school students in alternative learning environments. This program changes that narrative—combining academic development with emotional and behavioral support to help students make healthier, more productive life choices.

“We believe in the power of early intervention and the importance of emotional well-being in education,” says Sol Marie Alfonso Jones, senior program director at The Trust. “We’re honored to support the Sunshine Center’s mission to uplift and empower youth who need it most.”

Together, we’re building brighter futures—one student at a time.

In Loving Memory of Two Remarkable Women

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of two former NYCT-LI board members and extraordinary community leaders: Phyllis Hill Slater and Marjorie Plaut Rogatz.

Phyllis Hill Slater was a trailblazing entrepreneur, economic development champion, and tireless advocate for small businesses, especially those owned by women and people of color. Her leadership with the Long Island Development Corporation and LISBAC empowered countless entrepreneurs and left an indelible mark on Long Island’s economic landscape.

Marjorie Plaut Rogatz, a fierce advocate for justice and equity, dedicated her life to fighting for the underrepresented. As President and CEO of Community Advocates, Inc., and co-founder of ERASE Racism, Marge led transformative efforts to combat homelessness, expand affordable housing, and dismantle structural racism across Long Island and beyond.

Both women embodied courage, compassion, and conviction. Their legacies will continue to inspire generations of advocates, leaders, and changemakers.

We extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, and all who were touched by their extraordinary lives.

May their memory be a blessing.
