Our firefighters recently returned after responding to Southwest Kansas last week with the Sedgwick County Wildland Task Force. Other departments sending units on the Task Force included Wichita, Derby, Clearwater, and Mulvane. 200 firefighters from 52 Kansas counties and 7 states responded to this event. Thanks guys for your hard work in helping our neighbors to the southwest. It's truly what being firefighters is all about. Thanks to Paul Guebara for putting this video together.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued this tornado watch for tonight and early into tomorrow morning. It's important that we post this as storms are building southwest of our area tonight and atmospheric conditions are increasing which favor tornado and severe weather formation. Storms at night cause more fatalities during the days. Have multiple sources ready to alert you and know where to go to take shelter immediately.

During yesterday evening's severe weather event, Colwich firefighters mobilized to provide eyes on information to Sedgwick County Emergency Management. Firefighters relayed information as the storm moved from the west, between Cheney Reservoir and the Andale area until it moved northeast and up to the west of Bentley. Our firefighters do this to help provide early warning to the area, as well as ensuring that apparatus can be prepositioned in a safe location for immediate response in the event of the approach of a dangerous storm.

To sound like a broken record, our area is once again in a Red Flag Warning for this afternoon and evening due to high and shifting winds, high temperatures, and low humidities. The grass and smaller brush continues to remain extremely dry even though there is some green up.

Please get those burn piles and prescribed burn areas thoroughly extinguished this morning. Also secure those chains and finally, please be safe smokers. Disposing of cigarette butts in mulch is not safe. Disposing of them in a butt container is.

Our firefighters responded on a mutual aid call this morning to the report of brush piles which had rekindled and were burning as a result of this morning's strong winds.

This is a reminder that if you are burning during good weather to please check weather forecasts prior to burning. Please heed fire weather watches and warnings by ensuring that burn piles are out and that they have been thoroughly stirred and extinguished before high wind events. Photo courtesy of KWCH.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Saturday afternoon and evening. In addition a Fire Weather Watch is posted for the rest of the weekend. Expect temperatures in the low 90s tomorrow with humidity values around 15 percent and winds to near 25. This extremely dry environment will cause dry grass and light fuels to ignite and burn rapidly. Sunday will be cooler, but dry and with higher wind speeds. Now is the time to check and double check your controlled burns to ensure they are completely extinguished.

Also as a reminder, controlled burning is suspended until further notice.
