Trafficking isn’t always obvious and can be overlooked if we don’t know the signs.

Here are a few red flags:
❌A person doesn’t have access to their own personal documents or identification
❌A person isn’t able to come and go freely from the place where they work/live
❌A person is providing labor or services under unclear conditions, or their work conditions keep changing

Trafficking often involves manipulation and coercion. A person may have sought out their job of their own free will before noticing that over time their power and choice over their own life has been stripped away.

Traffickers often use the internet to target young people. Here are some things you can do to protect your kids online:

💻Use privacy settings on social media: if your teen uses social media make sure that the privacy settings on their accounts prevent messaging with strangers.

🗣️Talk to your child about avoiding conversations online with people that they don’t know.

📞Report any inappropriate conversations between a child and an adult to law enforcement.

In some human trafficking scenarios, the survivor may have initially consented to working for their perpetrator but over time the labor became forced through fraud or coercion or some other form of exploitation. It is still considered trafficking even if the survivor initially gave consent.

It is estimated that more than 27.6 million people are currently being subjected to human trafficking around the word.

In Washington state, the National Human Trafficking Hotline identified over 400 survivors of human trafficking in 2024 alone.

This month we will be diving into the topic of human trafficking. Human trafficking is the use of force or coercion to exploit a person for labor, services, or commercial s*x.

Trafficking doesn’t always look like it does in the movies. It can happen in any community, and it often goes unnoticed.

Understanding trafficking and being able to identify it is a great first step in protecting our community

We will be sharing information about human trafficking from now to the end of the month.
