Jacqueline “Jackie” Cook, a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, has spent nearly 50 years preserving and advocating for the histories of the Columbia Plateau through archaeology, museum work, and repatriation efforts. Her career includes helping develop the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, overseeing tribal collections and museums, and playing a key role in the return of the Ancient One and the repatriation of more than 1,500 ancestors from institutions across the nation.

We are proud that Joe Barreca is the recipient of the Washington State Historical Society David Douglas Award for 2026. The award recognizes the significant contribution of an individual or organization through projects, exhibits, digital presentations, or programs that inform on any field of Washington State history.
Joe Barreca – The Heritage Network is recognized for organizing the 2025 bicentennial commemoration of Fort Colvile, a year-long series of events exploring the complex history and lasting impacts of the trading post. The commemoration brought together historians, Tribal members, and community members through public programs, cultural events, and a regional summit examining the fort’s legacy across the Pacific Northwest

Some dates commemorating the establishment of Hudson’s Bay
Fort Colvile in 2025.
• May 17th – Saturday and the grand reopening of the Kettle Falls Historic Center. The
NW Fur Trade Historians will be at Kettle Falls for the Fur Trade Festival. The National Park Service still sponsors it, and busloads of students will visit the fur trade encampment May 15-16.
• June 20th – The annual Salmon Ceremony across the lake from Mission Point and the Kettle Falls Historic Center. The Canoe Journey from Revelstoke, BC will arrive at 9 AM. The Salmon Ceremony itself will begin at 10 AM. Parking and a shuttle will
be available at the museum
• June 21st – Native Culture Day (perhaps weekend). Some permissions are in place but details are not yet available.
• October 18th – Fort Colvile Summit at the Mistequa Hotel, 10 AM roundtable discussion and teleconference. 12 AM – luncheon with keynote speaker.

As we begin preparing for the 2025 Bicentennial of Hudson's Bay Company Fort Colvile, these events help bring fur trade history to life.

The Spokane House Fur Trade Encampment is this weekend June 11th and 12th. Both days are free days in the park and a WA State Parks Pass is not required. We hope to see you there!
