Colusa County in the heart of the Sacramento River Valley is in the north Central Interior of California, bordered to the west by the Coastal Mountain Range and to our east the Sacramento River. Untouched by massive city development, farm and farm related industry make up 25 percent of total employment, the highest in the Sacramento Valley. Although the county is interested in attracting a range o

f industries, its fundamental strategy is to build on its growing agribusiness base. Colusa County is located on Interstate-5 and State Highway 20, the main north/south & east/west thoroughfares running across her centerline. With our close proximity to the State Capitol, the Sacramento International Airport is approximately 30 minutes south of the county line. The 7,000-foot peak of Snow Mountain sits on the County's western edge in the Mendocino National Forest. Traveling down from the mountain, one passes the rangelands that cover much of the County's western third. About 10 miles west of Interstate-5, these foothills ease into the rich, fertile soils of the Sacramento Valley. The Sacramento River, with a watershed covering much of Upstate California’s interior, washes the county's eastern boundary.

The Colusa County Sheriff’s Office proudly recognizes and congratulates Sheriff Garofalo on his retirement after 30 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Colusa County.

Over the course of three decades, Sheriff Garofalo demonstrated an unwavering commitment to public safety, professional excellence, and the well-being of the community he served. His career reflects a lifetime of service dedicated to protecting others, strengthening the Sheriff’s Office, and ensuring the safety and security of Colusa County residents.
As Sheriff, Garofalo led the organization with integrity, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to the values of public service. Under his leadership, the Sheriff’s Office navigated challenges, embraced opportunities for growth, and continued its mission of providing exceptional law enforcement services to the community.

Throughout his 30-year career, Sheriff Garofalo fostered strong partnerships with community members, local agencies, and county leaders while supporting the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office. His leadership, mentorship, and dedication have left a lasting impact on the organization and on those who have had the privilege to serve alongside him.

For Immediate Release

On July 30, 2026, the Colusa County Task Force, with the support of the Colusa Police Department, Williams Police Department, Fish & Wildlife Cannabis Enforcement Program, and Fish & Wildlife K9, executed a search warrant at several suspected illegal ma*****na cultivation sites located in the 4000 block of Sites Lodoga Rd in Stonyford CA.

The search warrant covered three distinct parcel locations within the Squaw Creek area of Stonyford. This operation led to the dismantling of five separate illegal ma*****na cultivation sites, three of which were identified by on-site specialists from the Department of Fish and Wildlife as causing harm to natural creek beds. More than 4,400 illicit ma*****na plants were eradicated, and two suspects were apprehended on multiple felony charges after a brief attempt to escape the scene of the search warrant.

Charges include seven counts of cultivating ma*****na and polluting or damaging a waterway, along with two counts of conspiracy (felonies).

This operation represents the Colusa County Task Force’s ongoing dedication to protecting the residents of Colusa County from the risks associated with illegal ma*****na cultivation.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of former Colusa County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Dean Pearson. He dedicated many years of honorable service to the citizens of Colusa County, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege to serve alongside him.

The Fourth of July holiday is approaching quickly. The Colusa County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone that illegal fireworks are strictly prohibited throughout our county. We have seen an increase in their use in recent years, and this year we will be enforcing all applicable laws to the fullest extent possible. Illegal fireworks divert emergency resources and put our deputies, firefighters, and medical personnel in harm’s way.

The Colusa County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with local fire departments and other agencies, will conduct proactive patrols (WHICH MAY INCLUDE PLAIN CLOTHED OFFICERS) and respond swiftly to reports of illegal fireworks. Violators can face significant consequences under California lawup to and including arrest. Illegal fireworks pose serious risks to our community, especially in our rural area with dry conditions common this time of year.

Nationwide fireworks cause thousands of emergency room visits every year. In 2025, there were 15 reported fireworks-related deaths and about 13,000 injuries.
Fireworks have started tens of thousands of fires annually, including structure fires and wildfires.

“Safe and Sane” fireworks (those with the official seal) are allowed in permitted areas—check local ordinances.
Maximum Enforcement
Property owners may also be held responsible for violations occurring on their land.

We strongly encourage residents to enjoy professional public fireworks displays in safe, permitted locations like the Sacramento River State Park near Main Street in Colusa. These provide the celebration without the risks.

How You Can Help
Report illegal fireworks activity immediately to the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line (530) 458-0200 or 911 if you see an active fire or emergency.
Have a fire extinguisher or water source ready and clear a safe area if using any permitted items.

Double Homicide Investigation
For Immediate Release
June 27th, 2026

The Colusa County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating a double homicide that occurred on Sills Road in Arbuckle CA.

On Friday, June 26, 2026, at approximately 4:53 p.m., deputies with the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office responded to Sills Road following a report of a possible deceased person.

Upon arrival, deputies located two adult males who were unresponsive. Both victims had sustained apparent gunshot wounds and were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The victims have been identified as Jason Edward Carr, 48, of Dunnigan, and Richard Leon Mathies Jr., 36, of Yolo County. The Colusa County Sheriff’s Office has notified the victims’ next of kin.

Sheriff’s Office Detectives, assisted by the Colusa County Task Force and Department of Justice Crime Scene Investigators, responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Detectives remained on scene throughout the night processing evidence, conducting interviews, and following investigative leads.

At this stage of the investigation, detectives are working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident. Based on the information currently available, investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community. However, the investigation remains active, and all leads are being thoroughly pursued.

At this time, investigators are asking anyone who may have been traveling on or near Sills Road on Thursday, June 25, 2026 and Friday, June 26, 2026 or who may have information regarding this incident to please contact Detective Sergeant Antonio Ruiz at the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office (530) 458-0200. Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who observed suspicious persons, vehicles, or activity in the area.

No additional information is being released at this time to preserve the integrity of the investigation. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
