πŸ“Έ Flashback Friday: Remembering Captain Salter

Many men from Lowndes County answered the call to serve during World War II, including James Quilla Salter, known to many as β€œCaptain Salter.”

Born January 15, 1921, to Will and Cindy Salter, Salter enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private on October 2, 1942, at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.

After returning home from the war, he worked for the Columbus Brick Company and married Annie Lee Colvin Salter. Together, they raised eleven children and built their life here in Lowndes County.

Captain Salter passed away on June 9, 1999, leaving behind a legacy of service, family, and community.

Do you remember Captain Salter or the Salter family? We would love for you to share your memories with us in the comments!

Sharing an important update from the Friendship Bench Initiative! πŸ’š Sessions will resume in October when cooler temperatures return. Be sure to like and follow their page for the latest Friendship Bench updates and information!

Whew, Mississippi is HOT, and these temperatures just keep climbing!

As the summer heat continues, our Friendship Bench volunteers have already begun visiting their sites less frequently. For the safety of our volunteers and the community members who may stop by seeking support, we have decided to pause our regular Friendship Bench sessions until October, when temperatures should begin to drop to a safer and more comfortable level.

The benches are still there. The resources are still available. And help is still just a call or text away.

If you or someone you know needs immediate mental health support, call or text 988 to connect with the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

We look forward to seeing our volunteers back at the benches this fall! Until then, please stay safe, stay cool, and take care of yourselves and one another.

πŸ“š A Little Heads-Up From Your Library! πŸ“š

The Downtown Library will be closed September 14th through 19th. Monday and Tuesday, our staff will be busy behind the scenes completing inventory and getting our collection in tip-top shape.

Then, we’re heading to Montgomery for the Association for Rural & Small Libraries Conference! With a national conference being held so close to home, we have the unique opportunity to take our staff to learn from some of the best little libraries across the country and bring fresh ideas and inspiration right back to Lowndes County.

Be sure to stock up on books before we close, and remember, our digital collection is always available! We will re-open that following week on Monday, September 21st at 9:00am, with an organized collection and a staff energized and ready to put all those new ideas to work! β€οΈπŸ“š
