ESGR is a DoD office that seeks to develop and promote a culture in which all employers support and value the military service of their Guard and Reserve employees. We will post the most recent news, videos, photos and blog posts from our Reserve Component service members and their Ohio employers. If you serve in the Guard or Reserve...

The Secretary of War Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition presented by the U.S. Government to employers for their exceptional support of their Guard and Reserve employees.

If your employer has gone above and beyond to support your military service, this is your opportunity to recognize them for it.

Freedom Award nominations open October 1 and remain open through December 31, 2026, and you can nominate your employer at https://www.esgr.mil/Employer-Awards/SecDef-Employer-Support-Freedom-Award/Home.

Your nomination could be the beginning of an extraordinary honor recognizing an employer whose support has made a meaningful difference in your military service and your career.

It takes about 15 minutes to nominate an employer. That 15 minutes could lead to one of the most distinguished employer recognitions in the nation.

Last weekend, Ohio Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve hosted a "Boss Lift" at the Army Aviation Support Facility #1 (AASF #1) in North Canton.

Boss Lifts are a unique opportunity for employers to get a first-hand look at what their employees experience during their military obligations.

ESGR Northeast Regional Chair Tim Garth and Volunteer Tom Luczynski were on hand for the event. Employers were briefed on the mission of ESGR and the resources and support available to both employers and employees who serve as members of the National Guard and Reserve.

The Boss Lift also provided employers with a firsthand opportunity to experience Army aviation. About 50 attendees representing 42 Ohio companies and organizations participated in the event, and the highlight was a quick helicopter flight over the North Canton area, offering a unique perspective on the training, readiness, and missions of Ohio's citizen-Soldiers.

On Saturday, September 19th, a group of employers representing 37 businesses and organizations in Ohio participated in the Ohio Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Boss Lift event at Army Aviation Support Facility #2 (AASF #2) at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in Columbus.

A Boss Lift provides employers with a unique opportunity to step away from the workplace and experience a small part of what their employees encounter while serving in the National Guard and Reserve.

Saturday’s event included an educational brief about the military obligations of those who serve in the Guard and Reserve, as well as a flight around Columbus in military helicopters.

Attendees were able to experience just a little bit of military life as they learned safety protocol practices and readiness skills prior to their flight.

ESGR State Chairman John McCance welcomed participants and provided an overview of ESGR’s mission, along with the resources and support available to both service members and the employers who stand behind them. Other Ohio ESGR volunteers included Michael Bamber and Beth Jackson.

A special thank you to all of the employers who participated. Your support, understanding and commitment make a difference for the men and women who serve our state and nation.

A few Ohio ESGR volunteers met last night for dinner and a great conversation about upcoming projects, initiatives, and opportunities to support Ohio’s military community and their employers.

The commitment and enthusiasm of our ESGR volunteers are what make this organization so effective. Grateful for the time, teamwork, and dedication of everyone who continues to support our service members, military families, and employers.

There’s a lot of good work ahead, and we’re looking forward to getting started!

Earlier this week, several volunteers from Ohio ESGR presented a Seven Seals Award to The University of Akron.

The ESGR Seven Seals Award recognizes organizations that demonstrate outstanding support of military service members and their families. The University of Akron Military Services Center, under the leadership of Mary Rossett, M.S. Ed., J.D., supports the entire military student community on campus.

The University of Akron President R.J. Nemer accepted the award on behalf of the university.

The brief presentation included remarks by Ohio ESGR NE Volunteer Chaker J. Fadel (Lt. Colonel USAF, Retired and UA Alumnus); Ohio ESGR NE Chair Tim Garth, and The University of Akron President Nemer.
