“Lake Erie walleye anglers will continue to benefit from terrific walleye populations. The 2022 hatch will grow to catchable sizes in two or three years, when it will contribute to decades of excellent fishing in the Walleye Capital of the World.”

NEWS: Lake Erie Walleye, Yellow Perch 2022 Hatch Results

Results from 2022 Lake Erie hatch surveys showed western basin walleye, central basin walleye, and western basin yellow perch hatches were above average, while central basin yellow perch hatches continue to be well below average. These results are consistent with the recent trend of highly successful hatches for both yellow perch and walleye in Lake Erie’s shallowest and warmest basin, and strengthen the extremely positive long-term outlook for anglers.

Lake Erie Hatch Surveys
The Division of Wildlife completes western basin surveys in August. Those results are combined with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry survey results. Additionally, central basin trawls completed by the Division of Wildlife from Lorain to Ashtabula in September and October are used in population models for characterizing regional yellow perch hatches.
Survey results are used in conjunction with results from the other Lake Erie Committee agencies to determine hatch success in each management zone. This information allows biologists to better estimate how many young fish will enter the catchable population two years later, which is one factor used to determine safe harvest levels each year.

NEWS: Ohio Wildlife Council Approves Change to Three Fishing Lines Statewide

The Ohio Wildlife Council voted to approve a proposal to allow a maximum of three fishing lines statewide. The rule will take effect on Jan. 1, 2023. This change aligns statewide fishing regulations with those already in place in the Lake Erie Sport Fishing District, Ohio River fishing units, and Pymatuning Lake by increasing the limit to three lines per person.

This HUGE goldfish was found during an August fish survey at Fairport Harbor. Technicians Sam Truckly and Alek Davis want to remind all Ohioans to not release aquarium fish into our waters as they can have a negative impact on native fish species.

Blue catfish and flathead catfish are the two largest species of catfish found in Ohio. These catfish were caught during an electrofishing survey in Hoover Reservoir in late-June. The state record flathead catfish weighs 76.5 pounds. Can you guess how big this flathead is?
Blue and flathead catfish are easily distinguishable by their color and tail. Blue catfish are blue to white in color with no spots. Their tail is deeply forked, and their a**l fin is straight. Flathead catfish are a mottled black and brown with a square shaped tail and a short, round a**l fin.

⭐ Free Fishing Days on June 18 and 19 offer a unique chance for beginners and children to catch a fish. This will be the only weekend of the year in which Ohio residents 16 and older can fish public waters without purchasing a fishing license.

🎣 Here are some tips for those who might try fishing for the first time:
🐟 Keep the trip simple by considering the person’s age and skill level.
🐟 Choose a pond, lake, or stream where beginners can easily catch a few fish.
🐟 Use live bait to increase the chance of catching a fish. Live bait is also more interesting for children.
🐟 Bring your phone (camera), drinks and snacks.
🐟 Be patient – plan on spending time untangling lines, baiting hooks, landing fish, and taking pictures.
🐟 Most of all, keep the trip FUN!

🎣 NEWS: Angler surveys are underway at many of Ohio’s popular public fishing locations.

📊 Eighteen creel clerks will be gathering information in 2022. Six are based on the shore of Lake Erie, two on the Maumee and Sandusky rivers, five on the Ohio River, and five at inland reservoirs.

📅 Lake Erie surveys are ongoing until October; surveys at inland reservoirs run until November, and along the Ohio River until the end of the year. Historical surveys reveal that Ohio’s most popular species to target include walleye, yellow perch, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, trout, saugeye, sunfish, crappie, and catfish.
