City of Columbus to Launch
Aquatics Capital Improvement Project
COLUMBUS, OH – Columbus Recreation and Parks Department currently manages eight outdoor pools and one indoor pool at the Columbus Aquatics Center. The aquatics program also includes seven spray parks and fountains, which are fun options for small children to cool off safely during the hot summer.
Many of the existing pools and aquatic facilities within the City of Columbus are in need of improvements to better serve residents. To make sure these facilities and the related programming continue to meet the needs of the community, Columbus Recreation and Parks Department is leading the Columbus Aquatics Capital Improvement Project to learn what the public needs and wants in their aquatics facilities and programs.
“It is critical for our department to get feedback from our residents on how our aquatics facilities can better meet their needs,” said Paul Rakosky, interim director of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. “We are excited to begin the process of improving our pools and aquatics facilities around the City, and getting input from our residents is a crucial step forward.”
All residents are asked to fill out an online survey about the aquatics facilities in the city, which will be available through Saturday, May 15. Take the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ACIPSurvey.
An online public meeting specifically focusing on improvements at Glenwood Pool and Windsor Pool will be held on Thursday, May 13, from 6-8 p.m. via Zoom. Both of these facilities have been identified for renovations by Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, and the feedback from residents through the online survey will be used to make improvements to the Glenwood and Windsor pools. Sign up for the public meeting at https://bit.ly/3tryQo7.
The results of the survey and future public meetings over the next year about aquatics facilities will be used to develop a comprehensive plan for aquatics, which will continue to provide opportunities for community gathering places, enjoying outdoor recreation and developing skills for healthy lifestyles. Additional online public meetings will be announced later this year.
More information about the project is available online at http://columbusaquatics.org.

Columbus Recreation and Parks Department continues to focus on serving residents during the pandemic. With the recent surge in cases in Columbus, the department is shifting its focus to ensure residents’ essential needs are met while promoting social distancing to slow community spread.

For the next month, Columbus Recreation and Parks will focus on essential services including:

Ensuring residents have access to fresh produce via free mobile produce markets. The produce markets will continue through Dec. 18. Visit golunch.club/ or visit the department’s social media channels for a current schedule.
Supporting connectivity during the holiday season via mobile Thanksgiving meals. With the support of the American Electric Power Foundation, Boar’s Head and Mid-Ohio Food Collective, the department is distributing 3,000 hot Thanksgiving meals at community centers with the highest need.
Enhancing core educational services at community centers, including Active Learning Sites and Capital Kids programming. All participants must register in advance; for more information, visitcolumbus.gov/recparkscovid19/.
While community center access is limited to registered participants and staff, center staff are available during center hours to help residents connect with needed support. Residents who need referrals to essential social services are encouraged to call their local community center.

Parks and trails continue to serve as a safe and accessible way for residents to get outdoors. Although the weather is getting chilly, it is important residents follow all safety protocols – practice social distancing, clean your hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer and stay home if you’re not feeling well.

To allow for this focus, certain non-essential programming and facilities will be temporarily unavailable, including some recreational activities, sports leagues and fitness rooms, as well as the Columbus Aquatics Center and the Cultural Arts Center.
