These 4 members of our Operations Team participated in the Franklin County Engineer’s 39th Annual Snow & Ice Roadeo Training and Competition Event. The event helps drivers sharpen their skills, practice navigating obstacles, learn equipment handling, and simulate blind-side backing for intersections. Drivers compete in a scored contest using snowplows, dump trucks, salt spreaders, and skid steers.

Great Job Luke! County Engineers always improving their infrastructure and serving the citizens of Ohio.

Let’s talk about the Hardin County Engineer Lucas J. Underwood!

What does the County Engineer’s Office do? From maintaining roads, bridges and ditches to overseeing the Tax Map Department and assisting our townships, villages, schools and county offices, the Engineer’s Office plays an important role in keeping Hardin County moving.

This role doesn’t come without its challenges! With limited resources and a budget driven primarily by gasoline taxes and license plate fees, the office works to balance community needs with what can realistically be accomplished each year.

If you drive on roads in the county there are some things you can do to help the Engineers Office run smoothly! Report road hazards and drainage concerns, participate in public planning meetings, and contact the Engineer’s Office before beginning a new or renovated residential or other project to make sure permits, taxes and other requirements are in order.

Working together helps keep Hardin County safe, connected and moving forward! Thank you Mr. Underwood for all you do!

The biggest question lobbed at roundabout projects is WHY?

And the answer is usually pretty simple: they reduce fatal and injury crashes. Nationally, the Federal Highway Administration has seen an 82% average drop in fatal and injury crashes from the installation of roundabouts.

Locally, Lake Erie West Regional Council 2023 Report on Regional Roundabouts found single-lane roundabouts, which make up the vast majority of our roundabout network, reduced fatal and injury crashes by 50% and total crashes by nearly 30%.

Roundabouts are never installed for no reason. Their justification is either safety-related or congestion related and always funded with state and federal dollars. And to date, each roundabout has been performing as expected in reducing injury rates and easing congestion, while also saving taxpayers money long-term.
