The Franklin County Board of Commissioners joined America 250-Ohio last Thursday to dedicate Franklin County’s Heritage Tree at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum.

As part of the statewide Heritage Trees: Planting History program, a native white oak is being planted in each of Ohio’s 88 counties to commemorate our nation’s 250th anniversary.

The white oak carries a special significance. Its strong, rot-resistant wood helped build the nation’s first Navy ships, and the National Veterans Memorial and Museum features white oak floors that reflect this same heritage. The museum will provide a lasting home for Franklin County’s tree, connecting our nation’s history, military service, and future generations.

We’re proud to be part of this statewide effort to celebrate America’s story and honor those who have served our country.

In person: The Franklin County Board of Elections is open until 9 p.m. today at 1700 Morse Road.

Online: Register or update your registration at VoteOhio.gov until 11:59 p.m. An Ohio driver’s license or state ID is required for online registration.

At your local library: Complete your registration by the library’s close of business today.

Tomorrow, October 6: Early in-person voting and absentee voting begin.

Make sure you’re registered, make your voting plan and make your voice heard.

Over the last two years, 745 refugees in Franklin County have secured employment with the support of our local partner agencies.

As federal support declines, the Board of Commissioners is stepping in with local county funding to sustain these vital employment services across seven Central Ohio counties.

“With a little bit of support, they can go a long way,” said Angie Plummer, Executive Director of Community Refugee & Immigration Services (CRIS).

The Franklin County Board of Commissioners met September 29 for its weekly General Session, recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month and approving continued funding for crisis mental health care, support for refugee employment services, and contracts that keep county services running for residents.

- Approved a distribution from the OneOhio Opioid Settlement Fund of $2.5 million per year for three years to support the Franklin County Crisis Center, which recorded 7,927 crisis presentations in its first year of operation, more than 20 percent above projections
- Approved $395,582 in subaward agreements with Community Refugee and Immigration Services, Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services, Jewish Family Services, and US Together, Inc. to help refugees find and keep jobs
- Authorized Franklin County Job and Family Services to continue its Refugee Support Services subgrant with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, funding English language instruction, job placement, and job retention services through June 2027
- Approved a $1.85 million amendment to the Axon Evidence agreement upgrading the digital evidence system used by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and extending it for four years
- Approved supplemental appropriations for the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board, including the purchase of the parking lot behind its East Broad Street offices and support for behavioral health medication costs at the county jail
- Approved a $5,000 extension with the Legal Aid Society of Southeast and Central Ohio to continue record sealing and expungement services through the Tap In Center
- Approved a $1,457,630 contract extension with Aetna Life Insurance Company to administer county employee dental plans through September 2030
- Approved a $14,000 contract modification for the Zuber Road/Plum Run South Drainage Outlet and property compensation for the Clark State Road at Waggoner Road roundabout project in Jefferson Township

These actions strengthen access to mental health care, help new arrivals build stable lives through work, and support the everyday operations residents rely on.

Changing outcomes for residents, one connection at a time.

For two years, the Tap In Center has helped Franklin County residents address eligible non-violent misdemeanor warrants while connecting them to legal aid, benefits assistance, license reinstatement and other resources.

Since September 2024, the Center has served 551 residents, recalled 304 warrants and helped dismiss 53 cases. The work continues this fall with upcoming community events.
