Columbus Township Trustee Will Not Pursue Reestablishment of Cumulative Fire Tax Rate
Columbus Township, IN

The Columbus Township Trustee’s Office has announced that it will not move forward with reestablishing the current cumulative fire tax rate at this time.

Township Trustee Kris Weisner stated that the decision follows conversations with members of the community regarding the potential impact of even a modest tax increase.

“After speaking with residents, it is clear that many are feeling financial pressure right now,” said Weisner. “While the proposed tax rate would have been minimal, I do not believe it is the right move at this time.”

Weisner cited broader economic concerns as a key factor in the decision, including rising fuel costs and ongoing uncertainty in global markets.

“With continued instability in the Middle East contributing to increased gas prices, local families are already facing higher everyday expenses,” Weisner added. “Given these conditions, I believe it is important to be mindful of the financial burden on our residents.”

The Trustee’s Office will continue to monitor economic conditions and community needs before considering any future adjustments to the tax rate.

Columbus Township Trustee Kris Weisner and Chief Josh Ferrenburg of the Columbus Township Fire Department are pleased to announce the acquisition of a new ZOLL cardiac monitor to enhance emergency response capabilities. This addition bolsters the department's capacity to deliver high-quality, life-saving care to residents and visitors of Columbus Township in Bartholomew County. Emergency medical calls comprise a substantial portion of the department's response volume, with cardiac-related emergencies remaining among the most time-critical situations encountered by first responders. The new cardiac monitor equips firefighters and advanced life support providers with advanced tools to rapidly assess, monitor, and treat patients experiencing cardiac events. This monitor replaces a failing and outdated unit acquired in 2003, which originally cost approximately $15,000. Through prudent purchasing, the Columbus Township Trustees' office secured a manufacturer-refurbished monitor for $36,602, realizing significant savings compared to the approximate $55,000 cost of a new unit.

This morning, I had the privilege of observing and participating in firefighter Luke Burton's rigorous full gear workout, which included an additional 60 pounds of fire gear. The training regimen consisted of full gear squats, pounding a 15-pound sledgehammer to a tractor tire, and dragging tires as deadweight. Notably, the intensity of the workout was evident, as it proved exhausting even to me without the added weight of the fire gear. I commend firefighter Burton and all firefighters who prioritize physical fitness to effectively serve our community during emergencies.
