Help House Democrats Stop SB5

Help House Democrats Stop SB5 We, the Democrats in the Ohio House, urgently need your help. As the Leader of the Ohio House Democratic Caucus, I write to urgently ask for your help.

SB 5 will slash the wages and benefits of hard-working, middle class Ohioans and ultimately kill jobs. It eliminates the rights of citizens to come together to bargain with management for a better life. SB 5 passed the Senate last week, and now the only thing in the way of SB 5 becoming law is the Ohio House. SB 5 is terribly unfair. SB 5 bars police officers and firefighters from bargaining for b

etter safety equipment. SB 5 throws teachers who strike in jail. SB 5 allows employers to unilaterally decide how much to pay/cut school bus drivers, cafeteria workers and people who pick up our trash. House Democrats will stand up for our middle class families. By signing our petition, you will be telling the House Republicans that basic fairness should allow these hard working folks to join together to bargain for reasonable wages and terms of employment. I hope you will stand with us as we challenge Republican lawmakers every step of the way and ensure the voices of middle class families are heard. Republicans refused to listen to the overwhelming opposition to SB 5, but House Democrats have heard you loud and clear. Please support our efforts today so that we can continue to work on behalf of teachers, police and firefighters across Ohio. Sincerely,

Armond Budish
Minority Leader

A year ago today, John Kasich signed Senate Bill 5. What were you feeling then? What are we going to do to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Today is Super Tuesday! Make sure to vote today if you haven't already. Polls are open from 6:30am to 7:30 pm.

“The House Democratic caucus is very impressed with the number of candidates that we have and because of the Republican over-reach and the attack on the middle class, we will be able to make significant gains,” said Alex Youn, executive director of the Ohio House Democratic Caucus. “How many gains that is — it’s too early to determine. If the Republicans continue as they are, we’ll be in a very good position.”

COLUMBUS — Senate Bill 5 ended in defeat last November, but candidates upset about the GOP’s effort to curtail public employee collective bargaining are crowding ballots this election season.

"Ohio voters sent John Kasich a strong message in November by repealing Senate Bill 5 [that would have restricted collective bargaining] and his numbers haven't improved any since then," said Dean Debnam, president of Democratic Party-affiliated polling firm. "He remains one of the least popular governors in the country and that could help Democratic prospects in the state this fall."

Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich has a 53 percent disapproval rating among the state's voters, a Public Policy Polling survey released Wednesday indicated.

"A total of 385,253 valid signatures of registered Ohio voters is needed to put the measure on the ballot. The vote would come a year after Ohioans resoundingly defeated Senate Bill 5, which would have slashed collective-bargaining rights for state and local government workers."

A group seeking to bring a November statewide vote to make Ohio a “right-to-work” state got the OK to circulate its petition yesterday.

"Meanwhile, the coalition of Democrats, unions and President Barack Obama’s Ohio re-election team that collected the signatures to get House Bill 194 on the ballot is in no mood to talk and is vowing to overturn any new elections changes that GOP lawmakers try to re-enact this year."

Senate Republicans want to repeal a package of election law changes that is facing a referendum on the November ballot and then work out a bipartisan agreement on a new batch of revisions.

From the Cincinnati Enquirer:

John Kasich’s second State of the State speech Tuesday was rambling and at times bizarre. Among his head-jerking references, Kasich told the first three winners of a newly-created state courage award not to sell the medals on eBay; pointed out his “hot wife;” and imitated someone with Parkinson’s disease when he talked about “deep brain massage.”

In other words, typical Kasich.

On the same day that Indiana passed it's Right to Work For Less law, AG DeWine has approved the summary petition to put Right to Work For Less on the ballot in Ohio. The extreme right will begin to collect signatures now.

Attorney General Mike DeWine today certified a petition for a proposed constitutional amendment making Ohio a right-to-work state.

"November of next year, there are state legislative elections. We have to vote out the people who supported Issue 2," Armond Budish said. "In November 2014, we've got to vote out this governor."

ASHLAND -- The Ohio House minority leader compared State Issue 2 to divorce proceedings where the two parties are dividing their property.

Do you agree with Rep. Lou Blessing? Let's send him a message on Tuesday. Vote NO on Issue 2 to defeat Senate Bill 5.

In a recent interview, a top Ohio Republican defended this in a curiously belligerent way, one that may reverberate in the race’s final days: He claimed lawmakers don’t need to take a pay cut in the spirit of shared sacrifice, because “I earn my pay,” adding: “Republicans earn their money.”

A striking interview with an Ohio Republican.
